Analysis of a buried deposit in the Diamond Valley of southern California has revealed well-preserved pollen, wood, and diatom remains. Accelerator mass spectrometry dates of 41,200±2100 and 41,490±1380 14C yr B.P. place this deposit in marine isotope stage 3. Diatoms suggest a shallow lacustrine environment. Pollen data suggest that several plant communities were present near the site, with grassland, scrub, chaparral, forest, and riparian communities represented. Comparison with modern pollen suggests similarities with montane forests in the nearby San Bernardino and San Jacinto ranges, indicating vegetation lowering by at least 900 m elevation and temperatures 4°–5°C cooler than today. An increase in high-elevation conifer pollen documents climatic cooling near the profile top. Early-profile diatoms are typical of warm water with high alkalinity and conductivity, whereas later diatoms suggest a higher flow regime and input of cooler water into the system. We suggest that the sequence is part of the cooling phase of an interstadial Dansgaard–Oeschger cycle. Records of the middle Wisconsin period are rare in southern California, but the Diamond Valley site is similar to records from Tulare Lake in the San Joaquin Valley and the ODP Site 893A record from Santa Barbara Basin. It is probable that the Diamond Valley assemblage is a local expression of a vegetation type widespread in the ranges and basins of southwestern California during the middle Wisconsin. 相似文献

A method is described for evaluating the ‘partial derivatives’ of globally averaged top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation changes
with respect to basic climate model physical parameters. This method is used to analyse feedbacks in the Australian Bureau
of Meteorology Research Centre general circulation model. The parameters considered are surface temperature, water vapour,
lapse rate and cloud cover. The climate forcing which produces the changes is a globally uniform sea surface temperature (SST)
perturbation. The first and second order differentials of model parameters with respect to the forcing (i.e. SST changes)
are estimated from quadratic least square fitting. Except for total cloud cover, variables are found to be strong functions
of global SST. Strongly non-linear variations of lapse rate and high cloud amount and height appear to relate to the non-linear
response in penetrative convection. Globally averaged TOA radiation differentials with respect to model parameters are also
evaluated. With the exception of total cloud contributions, a high correlation is generally found to exist, on the global
mean level, between TOA radiation and the respective parameter perturbations. The largest non-linear terms contributing to
radiative changes are those due to lapse rate and high cloud. The contributions of linear and non-linear terms to the overall
radiative response from a 4 K SST perturbation are assessed. Significant non-linear responses are found to be associated with
lapse rate, water vapour and cloud changes. Although the exact magnitude of these responses is likely to be a function of
the particular model as well as the imposed SST perturbation pattern, the present experiments flag these as processes which
cannot properly be understood from linear theory in the evaluation of climate change sensitivity.

Abstract Monthly mean sea‐level pressure (SLP) data from the Northern Hemisphere for the period January 1952‐December 1987 are analysed. Fluctuations in this field over the Arctic on interannual time‐scales and their statistical association with fluctuations farther south are determined. The standard deviation of the interannual variability is largest compared with that of the annual cycle along the seaboards of the major land masses. The SLP anomalies are generally in phase over the entire Arctic Basin and extend south over the northern Russia and Canada, but tend to be out of phase with fluctuations at mid‐latitudes. The anomalies are most closely associated with fluctuations over the North Atlantic and Europe except near the Chukchi Sea to the north of Bering Strait. The associations with the North Pacific fluctuations become increasingly more prominent at most Arctic sites (e.g. the Canadian Arctic Archipelago) as the time‐scale increases. Associations between the SLP fluctuations and atmospheric indices that represent processes affecting sea‐ice drift (wind stress and wind stress curl) are determined. In every case local associations dominate, but some remote ones are also evident. For example, changes in the magnitude of the wind stress curl over the Beaufort Sea are increased if the atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific is intensified; wind stress over the region where sea ice is exchanged between the Beaufort Gyre and the Transpolar Drift Stream is modulated by both the Southern and North Atlantic Oscillations. Severe sea‐ice conditions in the Greenland Sea (as measured by the Koch Ice Index) coincide with a weakened atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic. 相似文献
