Consideration is given to the case of a daughter population of a sexual species that becomes successfully established in an area previously lacking that species, as has occurred recently in the Krakataus. If the new area is isolated geographically and if the number of founder individuals is small, conventional wisdom foresees a reduction of genetic variability within the colony. This might obstruct genetic adjustment to new conditions. Recent studies of the genetics of such bottlenecked populations, however, show that, in some instances, genetic variability for quantitative traits may actually increase rather than decrease after a bottleneck event. Whereas loss of some quasi-neutral biochemical alleles may occur, the quantitative polygenic balances on which adaptation depends can be carried through the bottleneck into the new population. Novel phenotypes may result from natural selection during the generations that immediately follow the bottleneck. Growing shield volcanoes in particular show rapid turnover of their surfaces such that organisms surviving there must continually recolonize or become extinct. Such species, existing as metapopulations, should be prone to bottleneck effects that produce genetic shifts. Examples are given from Drosophila silvestris on the island of Hawaii. The relevance of such genetic shifts to population structure and evolutionary change in populations is discussed, emphasizing the probable role of metapopulation structure. 相似文献

IPCC-type climate models have produced simulations of the oceanic environment that can be used to drive models of upper trophic levels to explore the impact of climate change on marine resources. We use the Spatial Ecosystem And Population Dynamics Model (SEAPODYM) to investigate the potential impact of Climate change under IPCC A2 scenario on Pacific skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). IPCC-type models are still coarse in resolution and can produce significant anomalies, e.g., in water temperature. These limitations have direct and strong effects when modeling the dynamics of marine species. Therefore, parameter estimation experiments based on assimilation of historical fishing data are necessary to calibrate the model to these conditions before exploring the future scenarios. A new simulation based on corrected temperature fields of the A2 simulation from one climate model (IPSL-CM4) is presented. The corrected fields led to a new parameterization close to the one achieved with more realistic environment from an ocean reanalysis and satellite-derived primary production. Projected changes in skipjack population under simple fishing effort scenarios are presented. The skipjack catch and biomass is predicted to slightly increase in the Western Central Pacific Ocean until 2050 then the biomass stabilizes and starts to decrease after 2060 while the catch reaches a plateau. Both feeding and spawning habitat become progressively more favourable in the eastern Pacific Ocean and also extend to higher latitudes, while the western equatorial warm pool is predicted to become less favorable for skipjack spawning. 相似文献

Geomasking is used to provide privacy protection for individual address information while maintaining spatial resolution for mapping purposes. Donut geomasking and other random perturbation geomasking algorithms rely on the assumption of a homogeneously distributed population to calculate displacement distances, leading to possible under-protection of individuals when this condition is not met. Using household data from 2007, we evaluated the performance of donut geomasking in Orange County, North Carolina. We calculated the estimated k-anonymity for every household based on the assumption of uniform household distribution. We then determined the actual k-anonymity by revealing household locations contained in the county E911 database. Census block groups in mixed-use areas with high population distribution heterogeneity were the most likely to have privacy protection below selected criteria. For heterogeneous populations, we suggest tripling the minimum displacement area in the donut to protect privacy with a less than 1% error rate. 相似文献
