The Peruvian anchovy or anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) supports the highest worldwide fishery landings and varies in space and time over many scales. Here we present the first comprehensive sub-mesocale study of anchoveta distribution in relation to the environment. During November 2004, we conducted a behavioural ecology survey off central Peru and used a series of observational and sampling tools including SST and CO2 sensors, Niskin bottles, CTD probes, zooplankton sampling, stomach content analysis, echo-sounder, multibeam sonar, and bird observations. The sub-mesoscale survey areas were chosen from mesoscale acoustic surveys. A routine coast-wide (2000 km) acoustic survey performed just after the sub-mesoscale surveys, provided information at an even larger population scale. The availability of nearly concurrent sub-mesoscale, mesoscale and coast-wide information on anchoveta distribution allowed for a unique multi-scale synthesis. At the sub-mesoscale (100s m to km) physical processes (internal waves and frontogenesis) concentrated plankton into patches and determined anchoveta spatial distribution. At the mesoscale (10s km) location relative to the zone of active upwelling (and age of the upwelled water) and the depth of the oxycline had strong impacts on the anchoveta. Finally, over 100s km the size of the productive area, as defined by the upwelled cold coastal waters, was the determining factor. We propose a conceptual view of the relative importance of social behaviour and environmental (biotic and abiotic) processes on the spatial distribution of anchoveta. Our ecological space has two y-axis; one based on self-organization (social behaviour), and the other based on the environmental processes. At scales from the individual (10s cm), to the nucleus (m), social behaviour (e.g. the need to school) drives spatial organization. At scales larger than the school, environmental forces are the main driver of fish distribution. The conceptual ecosystem models presented in this paper may provide the final links needed to develop accurate forecasts of the spatial distribution of anchoveta over multiple scales.  相似文献

A method of kinematic analysis of structures, microstructuresand mineral preferred orientations, initially devised in the study of peridotites, has been applied to crustal rocks bearing evidence of large strains produced in metamorphic environments. Three tectonic lineaments (Angers-Lanvaux, Montagne Noire and Maydan) were selected. They illustrate a general situation arising in continental crusts when they are deformed by ductile transcurrent fault systems.The Angers-Lanvaux structure is bilaterally symmetric; its dominant feature is the horizontal stretching lineation which is parallel to the fold axes. The foliation and slaty cleavage in the most surficial formations wrap around the axis of the whole structure. The folds in the slates away from the axis also exhibit axes parallel to the general trend, but no stretching lineations. These folds are attributed to crustal shortening in a direction normal to the ductile fault. In the Montagne Noire recumbent folds are thrusted away from the axis of the structure over at least 25 km. The metamorphism is also centered on the structure and symmetrically reduced away from it. The core of the structure is occupied by a strongly lineated orthogneiss, cut by a late intrusive granite. The Maydan axial zone displays clear evidence of partial melting at various scales within the deformed gneisses: (1) in gashes perpendicular to the stretching lineation which in these anatectic formations tends to plunge at more than 45°; (2) in bands of deformed pegmatites; and (3) possibly in granites which on the one hand intrude the surrounding formations and on the other converge with increasing deformation on the fault zone. The quartz preferred orientations and microstructures in quartzite layers from Angers indicate that the plastic flow plane and direction lie, respectively, close to the foliation and lineation, the slight departure is ascribed to a flow with a rotational shear component.All this suggests a general model for the origin of such ductile zones. The horizontal relative displacement of crustal blocks along a ductile band is responsible for its overall steeply dipping foliation and horizontal lineations. Viscous heating progressively tends to concentrate the plastic flow along its axis. It is also responsible for the development of metamorphism and of anatexis at depth; the partially melted rocks tend to rise, building at shallower depth the arched structure in the axis of the ductile zone, with a continuing flowage parallel to this axis probably now in the solid state; they can also intrude the surrounding terrain as undeformed batholiths. The folds parallel to the stretching lineation in the axial zone are explained by the fact that, due to the escape of anatectic melts, the formations at depth flow in a narrowing channel. The upwelling of the axial structure induces a compression with folding in the surrounding sedimentary formations and gravity nappe sliding away from the axis.  相似文献

An iron-rich deposit dredged from the upper flank of Dellwood Seamount in the Northeast Pacific has been analyzed for major and trace elements, rare-earth contents and uranium isotopic composition. In terms of mineralogy and overall chemical composition, the deposit resembles other iron-rich deposits variously attributed to volcanic hydrothermal activity. Both the relative concentrations of the rare-earth elements and the isotopic composition of uranium rule out seawater as the sole source of elements in this deposit. The rare-earth element pattern indicates that these elements were derived from the underlying basalt. The234U/238U ratio is significantly higher than in seawater and can best be explained by preferential leaching of234U generated by decay from its parent238U in the underlying rock and subsequent redeposition of the excess234U together with the Fe and minor metals. These data are consistent with a model for the origin of submarine metal-rich solutions involving mobilization of elements from the interior of slowly cooling basalts by circulating seawater.  相似文献

In the Western Alps, some recent scarps were previously interpreted as surface ruptures of tectonic reverse and normal faults that agree with microseismicity and GPS measurements. Our analysis shows that in fact there are hundreds of recent scarps, up to 30 m high and 2.1 km long, with only pure normal motions. They share the same characteristics as typical sackung scarps. The scarps are mainly uphill facing, parallel to the ridge crests and the contour lines. They are relatively short (less than 2.1 km) with respect to tectonic fault ruptures, and organized in swarms. They cut screes and relict rock glaciers with a slow (commonly 1 mm/year) average slip rate. In the Aiguilles Grives massif these sackung scarps clearly express the gravitational toppling of sub-vertical bedding planes in hard rocks. In contrast, the Belledonne Outer Crystalline Massif exhibits scarps that stem from the gravitational reactivation of conjugate tectonic faults. The recent faults extend to about 1600 m beneath the Rognier ridge crest, but are always above the valley floor. The main scarp swarm is 9.2 km long and constitutes the largest sackung ever described in the Western Alps. 10Be dating of a scarp and offset surfaces shows that > 4 m slip may have occurred rapidly (in less than 3800 years) sometimes between the end of the glaciation and 8800 ± 1900 years ago. This dating, together with the location of some faults far from the deep glacial valleys, suggests that sagging might have been triggered by strong earthquakes during a post-glacial period of probably enhanced seismicity. The Belledonne and Synclinal Median faults (just beneath the Rognier sackung) could have been the sources of this seismicity.  相似文献

An expanded Cariaco Basin 14C chronology is tied to 230Th-dated Hulu Cave speleothem records in order to provide detailed marine-based 14C calibration for the past 50,000 years. The revised, high-resolution Cariaco 14C calibration record agrees well with data from 230Th-dated fossil corals back to 33 ka, with continued agreement despite increased scatter back to 50 ka, suggesting that the record provides accurate calibration back to the limits of radiocarbon dating. The calibration data document highly elevated Δ14C during the Glacial period. Carbon cycle box model simulations show that the majority of observed Δ14C change can be explained by increased 14C production. However, from 45 to 15 ka, Δ14C remains anomalously high, indicating that the distribution of radiocarbon between surface and deep ocean reservoirs was different than it is today. Additional observations of the magnitude, spatial extent and timing of deep ocean Δ14C shifts are critical for a complete understanding of observed Glacial Δ14C variability.  相似文献

The Aleksod region is composed of metasedimentary rocks and large areas of biotite and hornblende-bearing migmatites. Anatexis associated with the main deformation stages, occurred under high pressure and temperature conditions estimated at 13±2 Kbar and 750±50° C. The bulk mineralogical composition of the Telohat migmatites shows that their protolith was granodioritic. Internal structures of zircons and U-Pb data suggest a polyphased evolution, with a 2131±12 Ma age for the protolith and a 609±17 Ma age for the Pan-African tectono-metamorphic evolution, thus precluding any Kibaran event in the Aleksod area. Leucosomes are richer in Sr and display lower Rb, Zr, Nb, Y, Th, U and REE contents than melanosomes wherein accessory phases are stored. Eu contents are also lower in the leucosomes but in lesser proportion than the other rare earth's, leading to a significant positive anomaly. Petrogenetic modelling accounting for accessory mineral phases clearly shows that the trace element contents of leucosomes and melanosomes follow a distribution law consistent neither with equilibrium nor fractional melting. Their trace element patterns are best explained by the model of disequilibrium melting, with mixing of a few residual phases. A number of mounds each several hundred meters across and up to sixty meters high have been observed with SeaMARC II acoustic imagery and Seabeam bathymetry in the sediment-filled axial valley at the northern end of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The mounds are located a few kilometers west of the eastern valley-bounding normal fault scarp where the local sediment fill is approximately 300 m thick. All of the mounds are believed to be of hydrothermal origin, and one is associated with anomalously high heat flow in excess of 1 W m−2. A piston core collected from that mound comprises coarse clastic sulfide units interbedded with sulfidic muds. Hydrothermal minerals present in the 2.3 m section include pyrrhotite, pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, iss (intermediate solid solution in the CuFeZnS system), chalcopyrrhotite, galena, talc, barite, and amorphous silica. Mineral fabrics of the clasts indicate that the material was precipitated at or near the sea floor by mixing of hot hydrothermal fluids with cold seawater. Low concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Ag relative to those found in unsedimented ridge hydrothermal deposits, and the presence of pyrrhotite as an early phase mineral indicates that the vent fluids have been modified by reaction with sediments beneath the mound. Rapid sedimentation in a rift valley is clearly conducive to the formation of large hydrothermal mineral deposits like those believed to be present within and beneath these mounds. The relatively impermeable sediment cover insulates the crust, inhibits groundwater recharge, promotes long-lived discharge at a restricted number of sites, provides a substrate for the efficient subsurface precipitation of minerals, and through continued sedimentation, protects surficial deposits from the corrosive effects of seawater. No reliable estimate of the bulk composition of the mounds can be made with existing data, but their size is comparable to major hydrothermal mineral deposits found on land; ancient settings in which many land deposits formed are in many ways similar to the one in which the features described here are currently forming.  相似文献

Dry and dense snow avalanches are considered as dry granular flows. Theirinteraction with dams is the main objective of this paper. We studied howvarying the dam height could shorten a granular avalanche run-out thanksto a set of simple laboratory experiments carried out on different scales.Shortening the run-out was expected to depend on two effects: (i) storageof the granular material upstream of the dam, and (ii) local energy dissipations.A scaling law is highlighted. As suggested by dimensional arguments, thecontribution of the local energy dissipation was shown to be more dominantthan the storage effects.  相似文献

The circulation of an injected fluid in the deep granite of the Soultz-sous-Forêts HDR (‘Hot Dry Rock’) site causes important textural and mineralogical modifications. In order to determine the potential crystallization sequences along the fluid pathway, several experiments under thermal gradient were conducted at 600 bar (between 300 and 200 °C). After 40 days, the observed sequences of the newly formed products along the thermal gradient are always as follows, from high to low temperatures: quartz, feldspars, and finally interstratified clays, this implying a significant mobility of aluminium in the solution.
