China's first solar mission, the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory(ASO-S), is now changing from Phase B to Phase C. Its main scientific objectives are summarized as '1M2B', namely magnetic field and two types of bursts(solar flares and coronal mass ejections). Among the three scientific payloads,Hard X-ray Imager(HXI) observes images and spectra of X-ray bursts in solar flares. In this paper, we briefly report on the progresses made by the HXI science team(data and software team) during the design phase(till May 2019). These include simulations of HXI imaging, optimization of HXI grids, development of imaging algorithms, estimation of orbital background, as well as in-orbit calibration plan. These efforts provided guidance for the engineering, improved HXI's imaging capability and reduced the cost of the instrument.

A space-borne hard X-ray collimator, comprising 91 pairs of grids, has been developed for the Hard X-ray Imager(HXI). The HXI is one of the three scientific instruments onboard the first Chinese solar mission: the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory(ASO-S). The HXI collimator(HXI-C) is a spatial modulation X-ray telescope designed to observe hard X-rays emitted by energetic electrons in solar flares. This paper presents the detailed design of the HXI-C for the qualification model that will be inherited by the flight model. Series tests on the HXI-C qualification model are reported to verify the ability of the HXI-C to survive the launch and to operate normally in on-orbit environments. Furthermore, results of the X-ray beam test for the HXI-C are presented to indirectly identify the working performance of the HXI-C.

Hard X-ray Imager(HXI) is one of the three scientific instruments onboard the Advanced Spacebased Solar Observatory(ASO-S) mission, which is proposed for the 25th solar maximum by the Chinese solar community. HXI is designed to investigate the non-thermal high-energy electrons accelerated in solar flares by providing images of solar flaring regions in the energy range from 30 keV to 200 keV. The imaging principle of HXI is based on spatially modulated Fourier synthesis and utilizes about 91 sets of bi-grid sub-collimators and corresponding LaBr_3 detectors to obtain Fourier components with a spatial resolution of about 3 arcsec and a time resolution better than 0.5 s. An engineering prototype has been developed and tested to verify the feasibility of design. In this paper, we present background, instrument design and the development and test status of the prototype.

The X-ray Telescope (XRT) aboard the Hinode satellite is a grazing incidence X-ray imager equipped with a 2048×2048 CCD. The XRT has 1 arcsec pixels with a wide field of view of 34×34 arcmin. It is sensitive to plasmas with a wide temperature range from < 1 to 30 MK, allowing us to obtain TRACE-like low-temperature images as well as Yohkoh/SXT-like high-temperature images. The spacecraft Mission Data Processor (MDP) controls the XRT through sequence tables with versatile autonomous functions such as exposure control, region-of-interest tracking, flare detection, and flare location identification. Data are compressed either with DPCM or JPEG, depending on the purpose. This results in higher cadence and/or wider field of view for a given telemetry bandwidth. With a focus adjust mechanism, a higher resolution of Gaussian focus may be available on-axis. This paper follows the first instrument paper for the XRT (Golub et al., Solar Phys. 243, 63, 2007) and discusses the design and measured performance of the X-ray CCD camera for the XRT and its control system with the MDP.

The coronal magnetic field above a particular photospheric region will vanish at a certain number of points, called null points. These points can be found directly in a potential field extrapolation or their density can be estimated from the Fourier spectrum of the magnetogram. The spectral estimate, in which the extrapolated field is assumed to be random and homogeneous with Gaussian statistics, is found here to be relatively accurate for quiet Sun magnetograms from SOHO’s MDI. The majority of null points occur at low altitudes, and their distribution is dictated by high wavenumbers in the Fourier spectrum. This portion of the spectrum is affected by Poisson noise, and as many as five-sixths of null points identified from a direct extrapolation can be attributed to noise. The null distribution above 1500 km is found to depend on wavelengths that are reliably measured by MDI in either its low-resolution or high-resolution mode. After correcting the spectrum to remove white noise and compensate for the modulation transfer function we find that a potential field extrapolation contains, on average, one magnetic null point, with altitude greater than 1.5 Mm, above every 322 Mm2 patch of quiet Sun. Analysis of 562 quiet Sun magnetograms spanning the two latest solar minima shows that the null point density is relatively constant with roughly 10% day-to-day variation. At heights above 1.5 Mm, the null point density decreases approximately as the inverse cube of height. The photospheric field in the quiet Sun is well approximated as that from discrete elements with mean flux 〈|φ|〉=1.0×1019 Mx distributed randomly with density n=0.007 Mm−2.

We study the general X-ray and multiwavelength characteristics of microflares of GOES class A0.7 to B7.4 (background subtracted) detected by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) on 26 September 2003 comparing them with the properties of regular flares. All the events for which X-ray imaging was feasible originated in one active region and were accumulated in areas with intermixed magnetic polarities. During the events’ rise and peak phase, the RHESSI X-ray spectra show a steep nonthermal power-law component (4?γ?10) for energies ??10 keV. Further evidence for the presence of electron beams is provided by the association with radio type III bursts in 5 out of 11 events where AIP radio spectra were available. The strongest event in our sample shows radio signatures of a type II precursor. The thermally emitting flare plasma observed by RHESSI is found to be hot, 11?T?15 MK, with small emission measures, 1046?EM?1047 cm?3, concentrated in the flare loop. In the EUV (TRACE 171 Å), the UV (TRACE 1600 Å) and Kanzelhöhe Solar Observatory Hα, impulsive brightenings at both ends of the RHESSI 3?–?6 keV X-ray loop source are observed, situated in opposite magnetic polarity fields. During the decay phase, a postflare loop at the location of the RHESSI loop source is observed in the TRACE 171 Å? channel showing plasma that is cooled from ??10 MK to ≈?1 MK. Correlations between various thermal and nonthermal parameters derived from the RHESSI microflare spectra compared to the same correlations obtained for a set of small and large flares by Battaglia et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 439, 737, 2005) indicate that the RHESSI instrument gives us a spectrally biased view since it detects only hot (T?10 MK) microflares, and thus the correlations between RHESSI microflare parameters have to be interpreted with caution. The thermal and nonthermal energies derived for the RHESSI microflares are \(\bar{E}_{\mathrm{th}}=7\times 10^{27}\) ergs and \(\bar{E}_{\mathrm{nth}}=2\times 10^{29}\) ergs, respectively. Possible reasons for the order-of-magnitude difference between the thermal and nonthermal microflare energies, which was also found in previous studies, are discussed. The determined event rate of 3.7 h?1 together with the average microflare energies indicate that the total energy in the observed RHESSI microflares is far too small to account for the heating of the active region corona in which they occur.

The acceleration of charged particles in a site of magnetic reconnection is analysed by detailed numerical simulations. Single or multiple encounters of the particles with Harris-type reconnecting current sheets (RCSs) are modelled as an overall stochastic process taking place within an active region. RCS physical parameters are selected in a parameter space relevant to solar flares. Initially, the charged particles form a thermal (Maxwellian) distribution corresponding to coronal temperature  ≃2 × 106 K  . Our main goal is to investigate how the acceleration process changes the shape of the particles' kinetic energy distribution. The evolution of the kinetic energy distribution, calculated numerically after one encounter of the particles with a single RCS, is found to be in good agreement with our previously published analytical formulae. In the case of consecutive encounters, we find that the kinetic distribution tends to converge to a practically invariant form after a relatively small number of encounters. We construct a discrete stochastic process that reproduces the numerical distributions and we provide a theoretical interpretation of the asymptotic convergence of the energy distribution. We finally compute the theoretical X-ray spectra that would be emitted by the simulated particles in a thick target model of radiation.
