We analyzed the visible broadband photometric data of comets 1P/Halley and 4P/Faye, obtained during their perihelion passages of 1986 and 1991, respectively at the Sanglokh Observatory (Tajikistan) and the European Southern Observatory (Chile). Applying the Lomb-Scargle periodogram in the V-band magnitudes and B-V color index, we find that the most probable periodicities are 79 ± 6 and 7.36 ± 0.04 days for 1P, and 6.1 ± 0.3 days for 4P. After comparing results of color and magnitude periodograms, we argue there is a systematic difference in the number of signals identified and the level of confidence of the same periodicity in the periodograms. Our results suggest the quest for periodicities in the color of the coma of active comets should be complementary to ones in magnitudes. We have verified that the distribution of the color B-V of Faye’s coma was invariable during and after the possible occurrence of a post-perihelion outburst. We verify a symmetry in the pre- and post-perihelion H0 photoelectric absolute magnitude of the comet Halley. The same issues were not observed in the B-V color index. We verify that the absolute magnitude H0 of the comet Halley differs from each other when calculated from the visual or photoelectric magnitudes, due to the section of the coma used to estimate these magnitudes. We also verified that this difference in the photometric aperture can compromise comparisons of B-V color distributions between active comets. 相似文献

We made polarimetric observations of comet Hale–Bopp covering awide phase angle range, from 18.8 to 47°. At certain phase angles the heliocentricdistance of the comet was less than 1 AU during its pre and post perihelion passages. Oneof the important findings, based on the data in the visual bands, is the higher polarizationwith stronger wavelength dependence compared to comet Halley, indicating the presenceof much finer grains in comet Hale–Bopp. It may also be noted that comet Hale–Bopphas shown highest degree of polarization known so far for any comet and hence fallsin the class of high polarization comets. Polarimetric observations were made of cometC/2000 WM1 (LINEAR)using narrow band (IHW) filters 4845 Å and 7000 Åand broad bands filters BVR during November 23–26, 2001 when the phase angle rangedfrom 15 to 22°. We calculate the position of dust trails from comet 8P/Tuttle, in an effort to explain unusual Ursid meteor shower outbursts that were seen when the comet was near aphelion. Comet 8P/Tuttle is a Halley-type comet in a 13.6-year orbit, passing just outside of Earth's orbit. We find that the meteoroids tend to be trapped in the 12:14 mean motion resonance with Jupiter, while the comet librates in a slightly shorter period orbit around the 13:15 resonance. It takes 6 centuries to decrease the perihelion of the meteoroid orbits enough to intersect Earth's orbit, during which time the meteoroids and comet separate in mean anomaly by 6 years, thus explaining the 6-year lag between the comet's return and Ursid outbursts. The resonances also prevent dispersion along the comet orbit and limit viewing to only one year in each return. We identified past dust trail encounters with dust trails from 1392 (Dec. 1945) and 1378 (Dec. 1986) and predicted another outburst on 2000 December 22 at around 7:29 and 8:35 UT, respectively, from dust trails dating to the 1405 and 1392 returns. This event was observed from California using video and photographic techniques. At the same time, five Global-MS-Net stations in Finland, Japan, and Belgium counted meteors using forward meteor scatter. The outburst peaked at 8:06±07 UT, December 22, at zenith hourly rate ∼90 per hour, and the Ursid rates were above half peak intensity during 4.2 h. We find that most Ursid orbits do scatter around the anticipated positions, confirming the link with comet 8P/Tuttle and the epoch of ejection. The 1405 and 1392 dust trails appear to have contributed similar amounts to the activity profile. Some orbits provide a hint of much older debris being present as well. This work is the strongest evidence yet for the relevance of mean motion resonances in Halley-type comet dust trail evolution. 相似文献

We analyzed the BVR photometry of comet C/2014 S2 obtained between March and June 2016, in observatories installed in Europe and the United States. Using the Lomb–Scargle periodogram, we found that the most probable periodicity deduced from the V-band magnitudes is 2.70 days, suggesting that it is the period of rotation of the nucleus of this comet is \(2.70 \pm 0.07\) days or \(68 \pm 2\) h, with a peak-to-peak light curve amplitude of \(0.4 \pm 0.1\) magnitudes. We verify that the absolute magnitude \(H_0\) and the activity index n differ from each other when they are calculated from the visual or CCD magnitudes. Considering the absolute magnitude \(H_{v0}=\) 6.0, obtained from visual magnitudes, we estimate that the lower limit of nuclear radius is 1.3 km. Analyzing the variation of magnitude R with the photometric aperture, we suggest that the coma of this object was in steady-state within the time limits of our observational interval. The coma had a mean color index B–V\(=0.79\pm 0.22\), which is typical of active comets. Additionally, we have shown that the use of a variable photometric aperture, linked to geocentric distance, is probably unnecessary for the comet PANSTARRS . 相似文献

Results are presented from studies of the features of secular brightness fading for 18 short-period comets. The results by Sekanina are supplemented by new data on periodic-comet apparitions after 1964. Annual and orbital-period variations in the absolute magnitude for each comet, as well as the corresponding average values are determined. A statistically significant effect of the 90-year solar activity cycle on secular variations in the integrated magnitudes of short-period comets is found. One minute counts obtained during the meteor outburst of α-Monocerotids on November 22, 1995, are analyzed in order to examine the possibility of filamentary structure in the stream profile. None is found. It is argued that far-comet type outbursts are due to the Earth's passage through the dust trail of a long period comet, thus offering a direct means of studying such comet dust trails. The NASA Ames HIFOGS spectrometer observed comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at epochs including 96 Oct 7–14 UT (2.8 AU), 97 Feb
14–15 UT (1.2 AU), 97 Apr 11 UT (0.93 AU), and 97 Jun 22, 25 UT (1.7 AU). The HIFOGS 7.5–13.5 μm spectrophotometry (R = 360
- 180) of the silicate feature at 2.8 AU is identical in shape to the ISO SWS spectra of comet Hale-Bopp (Crovisier et al.,
1997); the strong 11.2 μm peak in the structured silicate feature is identified as olivine. Upon close passage to the sun,
the HIFOGS spectra at 1.2 AU and 0.93 AU reveals strong peaks at 9.3 μm and 10.0 μm. The post-perihelion 10 μm silicate feature
at 1.7 AU is weaker but has nearly the same shape as the pre-perihelion spectra at 1.2 AU, reverting to its pre-perihelion
shape: there is no change in the dust chemistry by close passage to the sun. The appearance of the strong peaks at 9.3 μm
and 10.0 μm at rh ≲ 1.7 AU is attributed to the rise in the contribution of pryoxenes (clino-pyroxene and orthopyroxene crystals) to the shape
of the feature, and leads to the hypothesis that the pyroxenes are significantly cooler than the olivines. The pyroxenes are
radiating on the Wien side of the blackbody at 2.8 AU and transition to the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the blackbody upon closer
approach to the Sun. Composite fits to the observed 10 μm silicate features using IDPs and laboratory minerals shows that
a good empirical fit to the spectra is obtained when the pryoxenes are about 150 K cooler than the olivines. The pyroxenes,
because they are cooler and contribute signficantly at perihelion, are more abundant than the olivines. The perihelion temperature
of the pyroxenes implies that the pyroxenes are more Mg-rich than the other minerals including the olivines, amorphous olivines,
and amorphous pyroxenes. The PUMA-1 flyby measurements of comet P/Halley also indicated an overabundance of Mg-rich pryoxenes
compared to olivines. Comet Hale-Bopp's pyroxenes are similar to pyroxere IDPs from the ’Spray‘ class, known for their D-richness
and their unaltered morphologies: Hale-Bopp's Mg-rich pyroxenes may be pristine relic ISM grains.
