The formation of a disk galaxy within a slowly growing dark halo is simulated with a new chemo-dynamical model. The model describes the evolution of the stellar populations, the multi-phase ISM and all important interaction. I find, that the galaxy forms radially from inside-out and vertically from top-to-bottom. The derived stellar age distributions show that the inner halo is the oldest component, followed by the outer halo, the triaxial bulge, the halo-disk transition region and the disk. Despite the still idealized model, the final galaxy resembles present-day disk galaxies in many aspects. In particular, the stellar metallicity distribution in the halo of the model resembles the one of M31. The bulge in the model shows, at least two stellar subpopulations, an early collapse population and a population that formed later out of accreted disk mass. In the stellar metallicity distribution of the disk, I find a pronounced ‘G-dwarf problem’ which is the result of a pre-enrichment of the disk ISM with metal-rich gas from the bulge. In a previous paper, we have studied dynamical friction during a parabolic passage of a companion galaxy past a disk galaxy. This paper continues with the study of satellites in circular orbits around the disk galaxy. Simulations of orbit decay in a self gravitating disk are compared with estimates based on two-body scattering theories; the theories are found to give a satisfactory explanation of the orbital changes. The disk friction is strongly dependent on the sense of rotation of the companion relative to the rotation of the disk galaxy as well as on the amount of mass in a spherical halo. The greatest amount of dynamical friction occurs in direct motion if no spherical halo is present. Then the infall time from the edge of the disk is about one half of the orbital period of the disk edge. A halo twice as massive as the disk increases the infall time four fold. The results of Quinn and Goodman, obtained with a non-self-gravitating method, agree well with our experiments with massive halos (Q 0 1.5), but are not usable in a more general case. We give analytic expressions for calculating the disk friction in galaxies of different disk/halo mass ratios.  相似文献

We study the kinematic properties of stars under the combined potential of a Kuzmin disk with a simple radial oscillation and a logarithmic halo. The results are: 1) There exist stable, ordered and near-circular orbits. 2) The effect of the oscillating disk is greater on orbits with smaller angular momenta and on that departly greatly from the near-circular orbits. 3) Most of the motion in the disk is ordered motion. 4) Orbits that depart greatly from the near-circular orbits generally have chaotic motion and may eventually escape. But the actual fraction escaped in one Hubble time is small. 5) Disk oscillation may be one of the mechanisms for the formation and long-term maintenance of some star clusters; the larger the amplitude, the greater may be the number of clusters; for a given disk galaxy, there may be more clusters with small than with large angular momenta.  相似文献

The purpose of our work is to strongly constrain the mass to light ratio in the disk of the flocculent isolated Sc type spiral NGC 4414 using a combined high resolution interferometric CO(1-0) and HI rotation curve, and deep HST B-V-I images of the galaxy. To identify the mass contributions of the visible – stellar and gaseous – components, we observed the rotation curve with high resolution in the optical disk. The M/L ratios we derive are low, about 1.5 in I band and 0.5 in K' band. The B and V band M/L ratios vary greatly due to absorption by dust, reaching 4 in the molecular ring and decreasing to about 1.6 –1.8 at larger radii. This unequivocally shows that models, like most maximum disk models, assuming constant M/L ratios in an optical waveband, simply are not appropriate. We illustrate this by making mock maximum disk models with a constant V band M/L ratio. The key is having the central light distribution unobscured such that it can be used to trace the mass. The K' band M/L ratio is virtually constant over the disk, suggesting that the intrinsic (unobscured) stellar M/L ratio is roughly constant. We use our knowledge of the visible mass distribution to test disk and halo dark matter models. Fitting an NFW (Navarro et al., 1996) halo to the rotation curve suggests that NGC 4414 is in a low mass concentrated halo typical of small galaxies and early halo formation times. According to the two-infall model for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy the halo and bulge formed on a relatively short timescale (0.8–1.0 Gyr) out of the first infall episode, whereas the disk accumulated much more slowly and ‘inside-out’ during a second independent infall episode. We explored the effects of a threshold in the star formation process, during both the halo and disk phases. In the comparison between model predictions and available data, we have focused our attention on abundance gradients as well as gas, stellar and star formation rate distributions along the disk. We suggest that the mechanism for the formation of the halo leaves detectable imprints on the chemical properties of the outer regions of the disk, whereas the evolution of the halo and the inner disk are almost completely disentangled. This is due to the fact that the halo and disk densities are comparable at large Galactocentric distances and therefore the gas lost from the halo can substantially contribute to building up the outer disk. We predict that the abundance gradients along the Galactic disk have increased in time during the first billion years of the disk evolution and remained almost constant in the last ~5Gyrs. The present-day chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way are signatures of the Galaxy's formation and evolution. Using a self consistent chemodynamical evolution code we examine these properties within the currently favoured paradigm for galaxy formation – hierarchical clustering within a CDM cosmology. Our Tree N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code includes a self-consistent treatment of gravity, hydrodynamics, radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback and chemical enrichment. Two models are described which explore the role of small-scale density perturbations in driving the evolution of structure within the Milky Way. The relationship between metallicity and kinematics of halo stars are quantified and the implications for galaxy formation discussed. While high-eccentricity halo stars have previously been considered a signature of `rapid collapse', we suggest that many such stars may have come from recently accreted satellites.

We present a dynamical model for an active galaxy. Our model is a mass model with a disk, nucleus, and halo components. Numerical calculations and theoretical evidence show, that for a fixed value of mass of the galaxy the stellar velocities in the central region decrease as the mass of halo increases. Furthermore, the motion tends to be regular while, when the halo component is absent, the majority of orbits are chaotic. The dynamical evolution of the system is also studied when mass is transported from the halo to the disk and the nucleus. Our results are compared to the recently obtained observation data for active galaxies.  相似文献

We analyze the relationship between the mass of a spherical component and the minimum possible thickness of stable stellar disks. This relationship for real galaxies allows the lower limit on the dark halo mass to be estimated (the thinner the stable stellar disk is, the more massive the dark halo must be). In our analysis, we use both theoretical relations and numerical N-body simulations of the dynamical evolution of thin disks in the presence of spherical components with different density profiles and different masses. We conclude that the theoretical relationship between the thickness of disk galaxies and the mass of their spherical components is a lower envelope for the model data points. We recommend using this theoretical relationship to estimate the lower limit for the dark halo mass in galaxies. The estimate obtained turns out to be weak. Even for the thinnest galaxies, the dark halo mass within four exponential disk scale lengths must be more than one stellar disk mass.  相似文献

I present a model for the formation and evolution of a massive disk galaxy, within a growing dark halo whose mass evolves according to cosmological simulations of structure formation. The galactic evolution is simulated with a new three-dimensional chemo-dynamical code, including dark matter, stars and a multi-phase ISM. We follow the evolution from redshift z= 4.85 until the present epoch. The energy release by massive stars and supernovae prevents a rapid collapse of the baryonic matter and delays the maximum star formation until redshift z ≈ 1. The galaxy forms radially from inside-out and vertically from top-to-bottom. Correspondingly, the inner halo is the oldest component, followed by the outer halo, the bar/bulge, the thick and the thin disk. The bulge in the model consists of at least two stellar subpopulations, an early collapse population and a population that formed later in the bar. We are carrying out a programme to measure the evolution of the stellar and dynamical masses and M/L ratios for a sizeable sample of morphologically-classified disk galaxies in rich galaxy clusters at 0.2 < z < 0.9. Using FORS2 at the VLT we are obtaining rotation curves for the cluster spirals so that their Tully-Fisher relation can be studied as a function of redshift and compared with that of field spirals. We already have rotation curves for ∼ 10 cluster spirals at z = 0.83, and 25 field spirals at lower redshifts and we plan to increase this sample by one order of magnitude. We present here the first results of our study, and discuss the implications of our data in the context of current ideas and models of galaxy formation and evolution. The evolution of the velocity distribution function of a group of zero mass bodies in the gravitational field of a stellar cluster or a galactic disk is considered. We use the model of a purely discontinuous random process.  相似文献

The peculiar ring galaxies are formed as a result of a cosmic interaction. An intruder galaxy plunges through the center of a rotating disk galaxy triggering radially expanding density waves inside the disk. In this paper we exploited SPH simulations with the aim to examine the role of a “live” halo and/or bulge in driving the morphology of the interacting galaxy. Moreover we explore the effects of different implementations of the shear viscosity and of the pressure gradient in the code.  相似文献

We use an automatic algorithm to fit two-dimensional bulge and disk surface brightness profiles to a sample of 200 Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR) galaxies of known redshift and brighter than r=16. The bulge-to-disk (B/D) luminosity ratios can be combined with an estimate of the galaxy's local environment to address a number of key issues that are central to our understanding of galaxy formation:– How do B/D ratios depend upon galaxy luminosity?– What are the disk and spheroid luminosity functions for field galaxies?– How does the total luminosity in bulges and disks depend on environment?  相似文献

This paper has two parts: one about observational constraints, and the other about chemical evolution models. In the first part, the empirical differential metallicity distribution (EDMD) is deduced from two different samples involving (i) 268 K-giant bulge stars [Sadler, E.M., Rich, R.M., Terndrup, D.M., 1996. AJ 112, 171], and (ii) 149 globular clusters [Mackey, A.D., van den Bergh, S., 2005. MNRAS 360, 631], in addition to previous results (Caimmi, R., 2001b, AN 322, 241 (C01)) related to (iii) 372 solar neighbourhood halo subdwarfs [Ryan, S.G., Norris, J.E., 1991. AJ 101, 1865]. Under the assumption that each distribution is typical for the corresponding subsystem, the EDMD of the Galactic spheroid is determined by weighting the mass. The empirical age-metallicity relation (EAMR) involving absolute ages is deduced from recent results related to a homogeneous sample of globular clusters [De Angeli, F., Piotto, G., Cassisi, S., et al., 2005. AJ 130, 116]. In the second part, models of chemical evolution for the Galactic halo and bulge are computed, assuming the instantaneous recycling approximation. The EDMD data are fitted, to an acceptable extent, by simple models of chemical evolution implying both homogeneous and inhomogeneous star formation, provided that star formation is inhibited during halo formation and enhanced during bulge formation, with respect to the disk solar neighbourhood, taken to be representative of the whole disk. The initial mass function (IMF) is assumed to be a universal power law, which implies the same value of the true yield in different subsystems. The theoretical differential metallicity distribution (TDMD) is first determined for the halo and the bulge separately, and then for the Galactic spheroid by weighting the mass. The EAMR cannot be fitted into the Simple model that implies homogeneous star formation, but shows a non-monotonic trend characterized by large dispersion. On the other hand, simple models involving inhomogeneous star formation yield a theoretical age-metallicity relation (TAMR) which reproduces the data to an acceptable extent. For gas ouflow from the proto-halo, acceptable models give rise to different predictions in different alternatives. If the Galactic spheroid and disk underwent decoupled chemical evolution, i.e. no gas exchange between the related reservoirs, less than one third of the bulge mass outflowed from the proto-halo. If the Galactic spheroid and disk underwent coupled chemical evolution, i.e. some gas exchange between the related reservoirs, the existence of an unseen baryonic halo (or equivalent amount of gas lost by the Galaxy) with mass comparable to bulge mass, is necessarily needed. In this view, the outflowing proto-halo gas which remains bound to the Galaxy, produces both the bulge and the disk.  相似文献

The structure of the cosmic ray electron halo of a starburst galaxy depends strongly on the nature of galactic wind and the configuration of the magnetic field. We have investigated these dependencies by solving numerically the propagation of electrons originating in starburst galaxies, most likely in supernova remnants. The calculations are made for several models for the galactic winds and for the configuration of the magnetic fields for comparison with observations. Our simulation of a quasi-radio halo reproduces both the extended structure of ∼9 kpc and the subtle hollow structure near the polar region of the radio halo that are observed in the starburst galaxy NGC 253. These findings suggest the existence of strong galactic wind in NGC 253.   相似文献
