In this paper, we investigate the polarization property of the radiation amplified by astronomical masers in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Our model explicitly takes into account the broad-band nature of the radiation field and the interaction of the radiation with the maser transition   J = 1–0  . The amplification of different realizations of the background continuum radiation by the maser is directly simulated and the Stokes parameters of the radiation field are then obtained by averaging over the ensemble of emerging maser radiation. For isotropic pumping and partially saturated masers, we find that the maser radiation is linearly polarized in two representative cases where the magnetic field   B   makes an angle  θ= 30°  and  90°  to the maser axis. The linear polarization for maser radiation obtained in our simulations for both cases is in agreement with the results of the standard model. Furthermore, no instability during amplification is seen in our simulations. Therefore, we conclude that there is no problem with the previous numerical investigations of maser polarization in the unsaturated and partially saturated regime.  相似文献

Measuring solar-like oscillations in an ensemble of stars in a cluster, holds promise for testing stellar structure and evolution more stringently than just fitting parameters to single field stars. The most-ambitious attempt to pursue these prospects was by Gilliland et al. who targeted 11 turn-off stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682), but the oscillation amplitudes were too small (<20 μmag) to obtain unambiguous detections. Like Gilliland et al. we also aim at detecting solar-like oscillations in M67, but we target red giant stars with expected amplitudes in the range 50–  500 μmag  and periods of 1 to 8 h. We analyse our recently published photometry measurements, obtained during a six-week multisite campaign using nine telescopes around the world. The observations are compared with simulations and with estimated properties of the stellar oscillations. Noise levels in the Fourier spectra as low as  27 μmag  are obtained for single sites, while the combined data reach  19 μmag  , making this the best photometric time series of an ensemble of red giant stars. These data enable us to make the first test of the scaling relations (used to estimate frequency and amplitude) with an homogeneous ensemble of stars. The detected excess power is consistent with the expected signal from stellar oscillations, both in terms of its frequency range and amplitude. However, our results are limited by apparent high levels of non-white noise, which cannot be clearly separated from the stellar signal.  相似文献

We consider the magnetic and spin evolution of the X-ray binary pulsars Her X-1 and 4U 1626–67, assuming that their magnetic fields are of crustal origin. We adopt the standard evolutionary model which implies that the neutron star passes through several phases in a binary system ('isolated pulsar' – propeller – wind accretion – Roche lobe overflow). In the framework of the model under consideration, the strong magnetic fields of relatively old pulsars like Her X-1 and 4U 1626–67 can naturally be understood if, at their birth, they had a sufficiently strong magnetic field, ∼3 × 1013 G, comparable to the maximal field observed in radio pulsars.  相似文献

I suggest that the β -model used to fit the X-ray surface brightness profiles of extended sources, like groups and clusters of galaxies, has to be corrected when the counts are collected in a wide energy band comparable to the mean temperature of the source, and a significant gradient in the gas temperature is observed. I present a revised version of the β -model for the X-ray brightness that applies to an intracluster gas with temperature and density related by a polytropic equation and extends the standard version that is strictly valid for an isothermal gas. Given a temperature gradient observed through an energy window of 1–10 keV typical for the new generation of X-ray observatories, the β parameter can change systematically by up to 20 per cent from the value obtained under isothermal assumption, i.e. by an amount larger than any statistical uncertainty obtained from the present data. Within the virial regions of typical clusters of galaxies, these systematic corrections affect the total gravitating mass estimate by 5–10 per cent, the gas mass by 10–30 per cent and the gas fraction value up to 50 per cent, when compared with the measurements obtained under the isothermal assumption.  相似文献

Distances to nine dark globules are determined by a method using optical ( VRI ) and near-infrared (near-IR) ( JHK ) photometry of stars projected towards the field containing the globules. In this method, we compute intrinsic colour indices of stars projected towards the direction of the globule by dereddening the observed colour indices using various trial values of extinction   A V   and a standard extinction law. These computed intrinsic colour indices for each star are then compared with the intrinsic colour indices of normal main-sequence stars and a spectral type is assigned to the star for which the computed colour indices best match with the standard intrinsic colour indices. Distances ( d ) to the stars are determined using the   A V   and absolute magnitude  ( MV )  corresponding to the spectral types thus obtained. A distance versus extinction plot is made and the distance at which   A V   undergoes a sharp rise is taken to be the distance to the globule. All the clouds studied in this work are in the distance range 160–400 pc. The estimated distances to dark globules LDN 544, LDN 549, LDN 567, LDN 543, LDN 1113, LDN 1031, LDN 1225, LDN 1252 and LDN 1257 are  180 ± 35, 200 ± 40, 180 ± 35, 160 ± 30, 350 ± 70, 200 ± 40, 400 ± 80, 250 ± 50  and 250 ± 50 pc, respectively. Using the distances determined, we have estimated the masses of the globules and the far-IR luminosity of the IRAS sources associated with them. The mass of the clouds studied are in the range  10–200 M  .  相似文献

We present 20–110 µm absorbance spectra of H2O ice, deposited on amorphous carbon and silicate substrates, obtained over the 10–140 K temperature range. The measurements have been carried out in a manner that simulates the deposition, warming and cooling of H2O ice mantles on interstellar and circumstellar grains. For H2O ice films deposited on these substrates we find (i) similar 44-µm-band peak wavelength temperature dependences, (ii) no bandshape differences in the respective spectra, and (iii) a structural phase transition occurring between 120 and 130 K. In comparison with published data obtained using a polyethylene substrate, the 52-µm feature (the longitudinal optical mode) observed in our spectra is less prominent. This suggests the presence of material-dependent substrate effects that can alter the appearance of the H2O far-infrared spectrum. The crystallization temperature of H2O ice films deposited on our amorphous silicate substrate is significantly different from that reported by Moore et al. (1994) , who found crystallization temperatures down to < 20 K for ice also deposited on an amorphous silicate substrate. This is attributed to differences in the surface structures of the respective substrates. This may indicate that, at least in the context of laboratory measurements, substrate material composition is not as significant as substrate surface structure.  相似文献

In order to assess the contribution of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman α emitters (LAEs) at redshifts  3 < z < 7  to the ionization of intergalactic medium (IGM), we investigate the escape fractions of ionizing photons from supernova-dominated primordial galaxies by solving the three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer. The model galaxy is employed from an ultra-high-resolution chemodynamic simulation of a primordial galaxy by Mori & Umemura, which well reproduces the observed properties of LAEs and LBGs. The total mass of model galaxy is  1011 M  . We solve not only photoionization but also collisional ionization by shocks. In addition, according to the chemical enrichment, we incorporate the effect of dust extinction, taking the size distributions of dust into account. As a result, we find that dust extinction reduces the escape fractions by a factor of 1.5–8.5 in the LAE phase and by a factor of 2.5–11 in the LBG phase, while the collisional ionization by shocks increases the escape fractions by a factor of  ≈2  . The resultant escape fractions are 0.07–0.47 in the LAE phase and 0.06–0.17 in the LBG phase. These results are well concordant with the recent estimations derived from the flux density ratio at 1500 to 900 Å of LAEs and LBGs. Combining the resultant escape fractions with the luminosity functions of LAEs and LBGs, we find that high- z LAEs and LBGs can ionize the IGM at   z = 3–5  . However, ionizing radiation from LAEs as well as LBGs falls short of ionizing the IGM at   z > 6  . That implies that additional ionization sources may be required at   z > 6  .  相似文献

We study triple systems of galaxies with mean projected harmonic separation ≃0.6  h −1 Mpc     We call the systems 'wide triplets', in contrast to compact triplets with mean projected harmonic separation ≃0.04  h −1 Mpc, studied by Karachentsev et al. Data are taken for 108 wide triplets from a list compiled by Trofimov & Chernin; at least one-third of them are considered to be probably isolated physical systems. With typical crossing times of about the Hubble time, the wide triplets seem to be in a state of ongoing collapse. This is confirmed by a set of computer models which simulate well the observational characteristics of the ensemble of wide triplets. The simulations also give a statistical estimate of the total mass of a typical wide triplet: it proves to be ≃1013 M. This figure indicates that the dark matter mass is 15–30 times the mass of baryonic matter in the systems. The dynamics of wide triplets, as well as their dark matter content, provide new direct cosmological constraints by establishing that hierarchical evolution is occurring on a mass scale of ∼1013 M and a spatial scale of ∼1 Mpc.  相似文献

An extensive set of oscillator strengths and transition probabilities has been obtained for the UV transitions originating from the ground 4s24p n ( n =1–3) states of Ge II , As II and Se II . These new data, calculated within the framework of a pseudo-relativistic Hartree–Fock (HFR) approach, fill in the gap existing in the atomic data needed for elemental abundance analysis of the interstellar medium. The f values are compared with the rather scarce results previously published in the literature. The astrophysical implications of the new transition rates regarding the interstellar medium are discussed.  相似文献

We present simultaneous UBV uvby photometry for the 18 brightest northern Cepheids carried out between 1995 and 1997. Additionally, two fainter stars have been observed in the Johnson system only. The whole photometric data base contains about 3500 individual data points for 20 stars. The accuracy has been carefully tested with different methods. A serious systematic difference has been found between the present data set and the Stro¨mgren photometry available in the literature, which has probably been caused by the peculiar filter set used in the earlier study.   As an extension to the photometry, we took high-resolution optical spectra at David Dunlap Observatory in the red spectral region (λ/Δλ≈ 40 000, in the interval of 6200 and 6600 Å including Hα). The spectroscopic programme contained 12 stars from the photometric programme, the newly discovered bright classical Cepheid CK Cam and two double-mode Cepheids (TU Cas and CO Aur). New radial velocities obtained with the cross-correlation technique are presented. We found significant velocity differences between two cross-correlated spectral regions (6188–6220 and 6405–6435 Å) as large as 0.8–1.2 km s−1, which show very characteristic phase dependence in certain Cepheids.   Finally, recent period variations are briefly discussed in terms of phase jumps and duplicity.  相似文献

The light curve and spectra of Nova Centauri 1995 (V888 Cen) are analysed. The spectra were obtained a few days post-maximum. The nova is found to be a very fast nova, declining by 2 mag within about 5±2 d of maximum. The light curve shows strong oscillations in the transition region, of peak-to-peak amplitude about 1.5 mag and period 12–15 d. The light curve of Nova Centauri resembles closely that of Nova Aquilae 1918 (V603 Aql).
The early blue and red spectra obtained at Mt John show broad emission lines, many with P Cygni profiles. The absorption lines are found in two velocity systems at about −1765 and −3010 km s−1, in respectively the principal and diffuse-enhanced stages of spectral development, as defined by McLaughlin. Nova Centauri has many Fe  ii lines in emission, indicating that it is a member of the Williams Fe  ii class of classical novae.  相似文献

We present a direct spectroscopic measurement of the wind electron temperatures and a determination of the stellar wind abundances of the WC10 central stars of planetary nebulae CPD−56° 8032 and He 2–113, for which high-resolution (0.15-Å) UCLES echelle spectra have been obtained using the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope.
The intensities of dielectronic recombination lines, originating from autoionizing resonance states situated in the C2++e continuum, are sensitive to the electron temperature through the populations of these states, which are close to their LTE values. The high-resolution spectra allow the intensities of fine-structure components of the dielectronic multiplets to be measured. New atomic data for the autoionization and radiative transition probabilities of the resonance states are presented, and used to derive wind electron temperatures in the two stars of 21 300 K for CPD−56°8032 and 16 400 K for He 2–113. One of the dielectronic lines is shown to have an autoionization width in agreement with the theoretical predictions. Wind abundances of carbon with respect to helium are determined from bound–bound recombination lines, and are found to be C/He=0.44 for CPD−56° 8032 and C/He=0.29 for He 2–113 (by number). The oxygen abundances are determined to be O/He=0.24 for CPD−56° 8032 and 0.26 for He 2–113.
The effect of optical depth on the temperature and abundance determinations is investigated by means of a Sobolev escape-probability model. We conclude that the optically thicker recombination lines can still be used for abundance determinations, provided that their upper levels are far from LTE.  相似文献

An ensemble cluster has been formed from a data set comprising a complete magnitude-limited sample of 680 giant galaxies  ( M 0 B ≲−19)  in eight low-redshift clusters, normalized by the velocity dispersions and virial radii for the early-type cluster populations. Distinct galaxy populations have been identified, including an infall population. A majority (50–70 per cent or greater) of the infall population are found to be in interacting or merging systems characterized by slow gravitational encounters. The observed enhancement of galaxy–galaxy encounters in the infall population compared to the field can be explained by gravitational shocking. It is shown that disc galaxy mergers in the infall population integrated over the estimated lifetime of the cluster (∼10 Gyr) can readily account for the present cluster S0 population.  相似文献

We report the first detection of an inverse Compton X-ray emission, spatially correlated with a very steep spectrum radio source (VSSRS), 0038-096, without any detected optical counterpart, in cluster Abell 85. The ROSAT PSPC data and its multiscale wavelet analysis reveal a large-scale (linear diameter of the order of 500 h −150 kpc), diffuse X-ray component, in addition to the thermal bremsstrahlung, overlapping an equally large-scale VSSRS. The primeval 3 K background photons, scattering off the relativistic electrons, can produce the X-rays at the detected level. The inverse Compton flux is estimated to be (6.5 ± 0.5) × 10−13 erg s−1 cm−2 in the 0.5–2.4 keV X-ray band. A new 327-MHz radio map is presented for the cluster field. The synchrotron emission flux is estimated to be (6.6 ± 0.90) × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2 in the 10–100 MHz radio band. The positive detection of both radio and X-ray emission from a common ensemble of relativistic electrons leads to an estimate of (0.95 ± 0.10) × 10−6 G for the cluster-scale magnetic field strength. The estimated field is free of the 'equipartition' conjecture, the distance, and the emission volume. Further, the radiative fluxes and the estimated magnetic field imply the presence of 'relic' (radiative lifetime ≳ 109 yr) relativistic electrons with Lorentz factors γ ≈ 700–1700; this would be a significant source of radio emission in the hitherto unexplored frequency range ν ≈ 2–10 MHz.  相似文献

A new conceptual framework for the foundations of statistical mechanics starting from dynamics is presented. It is based on the classification and the study of invariants in terms of the concepts of our formulation of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. A central role is played by thecollision operator. The asymptotic behaviour of a class of states is determined by the collisional invariants independently of the ergodicity of the system. For this class of states we have an approach to thermodynamical equilibrium. We discuss the existence of classes of states which approach equilibrium. The complex microstructure of the phase space, as expressed by the weak stability concept which was introduced by Moser and others, plays here an essential role. The formalism that we develop is meaningful whenever the “dissipativity condition” for the collision operator is satisfied. Assuming the possibility of a weak coupling approximation, this is in fact true whenever Poincaré's theorem on the nonexistence of uniform invariants holds. In this respect, our formalism applies to few body problems and no transition to the thermodynamic limit is required. Our approach leads naturally to a ‘classical theory of measurement’. In particular a precise meaning can now be given to ‘thermodynamic variables’ or to ‘macrovariables’ corresponding to a measurement in classical dynamics.  相似文献

We have obtained an H2 v =1–0 S(1) image of a merging galaxy system, NGC 6090, by using a Fabry–Perot imager. The H2 emission originates between the double nuclei of pre-merger galaxies, and exhibits an arc-like or ring-like structure almost connecting the double nuclei. This structure is similar to that suggested for Arp 220 from the velocity field measured by CO radio emission. The separation of the double nuclei in NGC 6090 is 5–6 arcsec, corresponding to a projected distance of 3–4 kpc. This is much larger than that of Arp 220 and suggests that the molecular gas distribution can form an organized shape between the nuclei, such as a ring, in a rather early phase of merging.  相似文献

The solar photospheric abundance of ruthenium is revised on the basis of a new set of oscillator strengths derived for Ru  i transitions with wavelengths in the spectral range 2250–4710 Å. The new abundance value (in the usual logarithmic scale where the solar hydrogen abundance is equal to 12.00),   A Ru= 1.72 ± 0.10  , is in agreement with the most recent meteoritic result,   A Ru= 1.76 ± 0.03  . The accuracy of the transition probabilities, obtained using a relativistic Hartree–Fock model including core-polarization effects, has been assessed by comparing the theoretical lifetimes with previous experimental results. A comparison is also made with new measurements performed in this work by the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy for 10 highly excited odd-parity levels of Ru  i .  相似文献

We present a sample of eight extended X-ray sources detected in the wide-field (∼2.3 deg2), bright (2–10 ks) XMM–Newton /2dF survey, reaching a flux limit of  ∼2 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2  . Of these, seven are identified as secure X-ray clusters in the soft 0.3–2 keV band using a standard wavelet algorithm on either the PN or the MOS images. Spectroscopic or photometric redshifts are available for five clusters, spanning a range between 0.12 and 0.68. The X-ray spectral fittings show temperatures between 1 and 4.6 keV, characteristic of poor clusters and groups of galaxies. We derive for the first time the XMM–Newton cluster number count  log  N –log  S   distribution albeit with poor statistics. Both the  log  N –log  S   and the luminosity–temperature relation are in good agreement with previous ROSAT results.  相似文献

We report the detection of a 5.8 Å– 104 s periodicity in the 0.5–10 keV X-ray light curve of the Seyfert galaxy IRAS 18325–5926, obtained from a 5-d ASCA observation. Nearly nine cycles of the periodic variation are seen; it shows no strong energy dependence and has an amplitude of about 15 per cent. Unlike most other well-studied Seyfert galaxies, there is no evidence for strong power-law red noise in the X-ray power spectrum of IRAS 18325–5926. Scaling from the QPOs found in Galactic black hole candidates suggests that the mass of the black hole in IRAS 18325–5926 is ∼ 6 Å– 106–4 Å– 107 M.  相似文献

We present new absorbance spectra of the 3-, 6- and 12-μm features of amorphous and crystalline H2O ice obtained between 10 and 140 K. Three sets of measurements have been made. In series I, the ice film was initially deposited on to a CsI substrate at 10 K and successive spectra were then obtained at intermediate temperatures as the ice was warmed up to 140 K. The second set, series II, comprises spectra for ice films deposited and measured at temperatures between 10 and 140 K. In the third set of measurements, series III, spectra were obtained for an ice film deposited at 140 K and then at intermediate temperatures as the film was cooled down to 10 K. The series I and II results show that the ice undergoes an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition in the 110–120 K range. The 3- and 12-μm bands have similar trends in full width at half-maximum (FWHM) and opposite peak wavelength shifts. The temperature behaviour of the 6-μm band is different, as no clear phase transition temperature can be discerned from its FWHM and peak wavelength position data. In the series III spectra the peak wavelength positions and FWHM of the three bands remain relatively constant, thus demonstrating the stability of the crystalline phase against thermal cycling. A comparison between the laboratory results and astronomical spectra suggests that the identification of the librational band of H2O ice in OH 231.8 + 4.2 may be incorrect.  相似文献
