We present the spectra, positions, and finding charts for 31 bright ( R <19.3) colour-selected quasars covering the redshift range z =3.85–4.78, with four having redshifts z >4.5. The majority are in the southern sky ( δ <−25°). The quasar candidates were selected for their red ( B J− R ≳2.5) colours from UK or POSSII Schmidt Plates scanned at the Automated Plate Measuring (APM) facility in Cambridge. Low-resolution (≳ 10 Å) spectra were obtained to identify the quasars, primarily at the Las Campanas Observatory. The highest redshift quasar in our survey is at z ≈4.8 ( R =18.7) and its spectrum shows a damped Ly α absorption system at z =4.46. This is currently the highest redshift damped Ly α absorber detected. Five of these quasars exhibit intrinsic broad absorption line features. Combined with the previously published results from the first part of the APM United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) survey we have now surveyed a total of ∼8000 deg2 of sky i.e. 40 per cent of the high galactic latitude (| b |>30°) sky, resulting in 59 optically selected quasars in the redshift range 3.85 to 4.78; 49 of which have z ≥4.00.  相似文献

We combine Lyman-break colour selection with ultradeep (≳200 ks) Chandra X-ray imaging over a survey area of ∼0.35 deg2 to select high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN). Applying careful corrections for both the optical and X-ray selection functions, the data allow us to make the most accurate determination to date of the faint end of the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) at   z ∼ 3  . Our methodology recovers a number density of X-ray sources at this redshift which is at least as high as previous surveys, demonstrating that it is an effective way of selecting high z AGN. Comparing to results at   z = 1  , we find no evidence that the faint slope of the XLF flattens at high z , but we do find significant (factor ∼3.6) negative evolution of the space density of low luminosity AGN. Combining with bright end data from very wide surveys we also see marginal evidence for continued positive evolution of the characteristic break luminosity   L *  . Our data therefore support models of luminosity-dependent density evolution between   z = 1  and   z = 3  . A sharp upturn in the the XLF is seen at the very lowest luminosities  ( L X≲ 1042.5 erg s−1)  , most likely due to the contribution of pure X-ray starburst galaxies at very faint fluxes.  相似文献

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) is a 37.5 deg2, medium-deep, B -band imaging survey along the celestial equator, taken with the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. The survey region is contained within the regions of both the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS-EDR). The survey has a uniform isophotal detection limit of 26 mag arcsec−2 and it provides a robust, well-defined catalogue of stars and galaxies in the range  16 ≤ B MGC < 24 mag  .
Here we describe the survey strategy, the photometric and astrometric calibration, source detection and analysis, and present the galaxy number counts that connect the bright and faint galaxy populations within a single survey. We argue that these counts represent the state of the art and use them to constrain the normalizations (φ*) of a number of recent estimates of the local galaxy luminosity function. We find that the 2dFGRS, SDSS Commissioning Data (CD), ESO Slice Project, Century Survey, Durham/UKST, Mt Stromlo/APM, SSRS2 and NOG luminosity functions require a revision of their published φ* values by factors of  1.05 ± 0.05, 0.76 ± 0.10, 1.02 ± 0.22, 1.02 ± 0.16, 1.16 ± 0.28, 1.75 ± 0.37, 1.40 ± 0.26  and  1.01 ± 0.39  , respectively. After renormalizing the galaxy luminosity functions we find a mean local b J luminosity density of     . 1  相似文献

A by-product of the APM high-redshift quasar survey was the discovery of several distant (20–100 kpc) N-type carbon stars at high galactic latitude. Following on from this, we have started a systematic all-sky survey at galactic latitudes ⊢ b ⊢>30° to find further examples of these rare objects, and we report here on the results from the first season of follow-up spectroscopy. Faint, high-latitude carbon (FHLC) giants make excellent probes of the kinematic structure of the outer Galactic halo. Therefore, in addition to detailed spectrophotometry covering a wide wavelength range, we have obtained high-resolution (∼1 Å) spectra centred on the CN bands at ∼8000 Å, and have derived accurate (≲10 km s−1) radial velocities for the known FHLC stars. From the initial phase of our survey covering ≈6500 deg2, we find a surface density of faint N-type carbon stars in the halo of ≈1 per 200 deg2, roughly a factor of 4 less than the surface density of CH-type carbon stars in the halo. Intermediate-age, N-type carbon stars seem unlikely to have formed in the halo in isolation from other star-forming regions, and one possibility that we are investigating is that they either arise from the disruption of tidally captured dwarf satellite galaxies or are a manifestation of the long-sought optical component of the Magellanic Stream.  相似文献

An empirically motivated model is presented for accretion-dominated growth of supermassive black holes (SMBH) in galaxies, and the implications are studied for the evolution of the quasar population in the Universe. We investigate the core aspects of the quasar population, including space density evolution, evolution of the characteristic luminosity, plausible minimum masses of quasars, the mass function of SMBH and their formation epoch distribution. Our model suggests that the characteristic luminosity in the quasar luminosity function arises primarily as a consequence of a characteristic mass scale above which there is a systematic separation between the black hole and the halo merging rates. At lower mass scales, black hole merging closely tracks the merging of dark haloes. When combined with a declining efficiency of black hole formation with redshift, the model can reproduce the quasar luminosity function over a wide range of redshifts. The observed space density evolution of quasars is well described by formation rates of SMBH above  ∼108  M  . The inferred mass density of SMBH agrees with that found independently from estimates of the SMBH mass function derived empirically from the quasar luminosity function.  相似文献

We report the discovery of two radio-loud quasars with redshifts greater than 4: GB1428+4217, with z =4.72, and GB1713+2148 with z =4.01. This doubles the number of published radio-selected quasars with z >4, bringing the total to 4. GB1428+4217 is the third most distant quasar known and the highest redshift radio and X-ray source currently known. It has a radio flux density at 5 GHz of 259±31 mJy and an optical magnitude of R ∼20.9. The rest frame absolute UV magnitude, Mv (1450 Å), is −26.7, similar to that of the archetypal radio-selected quasar 3C273 [ z =0.158; Mv (1450 Å)=−26.4]. GB1428+4217 is tentatively detected in ROSAT PSPC observations, which has been confirmed by more recent ROSAT observations described in a companion paper by Fabian et al. Both quasars were discovered during the CCD imaging phase of an investigation into the evolution of the space density of radio-loud quasars at high redshift. Combined with our earlier survey results, these objects give a lower limit on the space density of quasars with radio power P 5 GHz>5.8×1026 W Hz−1 sr−1 between z =4 and z =5 of 1.4±0.9×10−10 Mpc−3. This can be compared to 2.9±0.2×10−10 Mpc−3 at z =2 from Dunlop & Peacock for flat-spectrum sources of the same luminosity.  相似文献

We combine photometric observations of high-redshift     quasars, obtained at submillimetre to millimetre wavelengths, to obtain a mean far-infrared (rest-frame) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the thermal emission from dust, parametrized by a single temperature ( T ) and power-law emissivity index ( β ). The best-fitting values are     and     . Our method exploits the redshift spread of this set of quasars, which allows us to sample the SED at a larger number of rest wavelengths than is possible for a single object: the wavelength range extends down to ∼60 μm, and therefore samples the turnover in the greybody curve for these temperatures. This parametrization is of use to any studies that extrapolate from a flux at a single wavelength, for example to infer dust masses and far-infrared luminosities.
We interpret the cool, submillimetre component as arising from dust heated by star formation in the host galaxy of the quasar, although we do not exclude the presence of dust heated directly by the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Applying the mean SED to the data, we derive consistent star formation rates ∼1000 M yr−1 and dust masses ∼109 M, and investigate a simple scheme of AGN and host galaxy co-evolution to account for these quantities. The time-scale for formation of the host galaxy is     , and the luminous quasar phase occurs towards the end of this period, just before the reservoir of cold gas is depleted. Given the youth of the Universe at     (1.6 Gyr), the coexistence of a massive black hole and a luminous starburst at high redshifts is a powerful constraint on models of quasar host galaxy formation.  相似文献

Starting from the ∼50 000 quasars of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for which Mg  ii line width and 3000 Å monochromatic flux are available, we aim to study the dependence of the mass of active black holes on redshift. We focus on the observed distribution in the full width at half-maximum–nuclear luminosity plane, which can be reproduced at all redshifts assuming a limiting M BH, a maximum Eddington ratio and a minimum luminosity (due to the survey flux limit). We study the z -dependence of the best-fitting parameters of assumed distributions at increasing redshift and find that the maximum mass of the quasar population evolves as  log ( M BH(max)/M) ∼ 0.3 z + 9  , while the maximum Eddington ratio (∼0.45) is practically independent of cosmic time. These results are unaffected by the Malmquist bias.  相似文献

The X-ray-luminous quasar GB 1428+4217 at redshift 4.72 has been observed with ASCA . The observed 0.5–10 keV flux is 3.2 Å– 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1. We report here on the intrinsic 4 − 57 keV X-ray spectrum, which is very flat (photon index 1.29). We find no evidence for flux variability within the ASCA data set or between it and ROSAT data. We show that the overall spectral energy distribution of GB 1428+4217 is similar to that of lower redshift MeV blazars, and present models that fit the available data. The Doppler beaming factor is likely to be at least 8. We speculate on the number density of such high-redshift blazars, which must contain rapidly formed massive black holes.  相似文献

Using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, we measure the mean transmitted flux in the Lyα forest for quasar sightlines that pass near a foreground quasar. We find that the trend of absorption with pixel quasar separation distance can be fitted using a simple power-law form including the usual correlation function parameters r 0 and γ, so that     . From the simulations, we find the relation between r 0 and quasar host mass, and formulate this as a way to estimate quasar host dark matter halo masses, quantifying uncertainties due to cosmological and IGM parameters, and redshift errors. With this method, we examine data for ∼9000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5, assuming that the effect of ionizing radiation from quasars (the so-called transverse proximity effect) is unimportant (no evidence for it is seen in the data). We find that the best-fitting host halo mass for SDSS quasars with mean redshift z = 3 and absolute G -band magnitude −27.5 is  log  M /M= 12.68+0.81−0.67  . We also use the Lyman-Break Galaxy (LBG) and Lyα forest data of Adelberger et al. in a similar fashion to constrain the halo mass of LBGs to be  log10  M /M= 11.41+0.54−0.59  , a factor of ∼20 lower than the bright quasars. In addition, we study the redshift distortions of the Lyα forest around quasars, using the simulations. We use the quadrupole to monopole ratio of the quasar Lyα forest correlation function as a measure of the squashing effect. We find its dependence on halo mass difficult to measure, but find that it may be useful for constraining cosmic geometry.  相似文献

We present results from a new XMM–Newton observation of the high-redshift quasar RX J1028.6 – 0844 at a redshift of 4.276. The soft X-ray spectral flattening, as reported by a previous study with ASCA , is confirmed to be present, with, however, a reduced column density when modelled by absorption. The inferred column density for absorption intrinsic to the quasar is  2.1(+0.4−0.3) × 1022  cm−2  for cold matter, and higher for ionized gas. The spectral flattening shows remarkable similarity with that of two similar object, namely GB 1428 + 4217 and PMN J0525 − 3343. The results improve upon those obtained from a previous short-exposure observation for RX J1028.6 – 0844 with XMM–Newton . A comparative study of the two XMM–Newton observations reveals a change in the power-law photon index from  Γ≃ 1.3  to 1.5 on time-scales of about one year. A tentative excess emission feature in the rest-frame 5–10 keV band is suggested, which is similar to that marginally suggested for GB 1428 + 4217.  相似文献

We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz>30 mJy . Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e <19.0 and red o − e >2.0 colours, in an effective area of ∼6400 deg2. Four sources were found to be quasars with z >4 , of which one was previously known. This sample bridges the gap between the strong radio surveys with S 5GHz>200 mJy and the samples of radio-weak quasars that can be generated via radio observations of optically selected quasars. In addition, four new quasars at z >3 have been found. The selection criteria result in a success-rate of ∼1:7 for radio-loud quasars at z >4 , which is a significant improvement over previous studies. This search yields a surface density of 1 per 1600 deg2, which is about a factor of ∼15 lower than that found in a similar search for radio-quiet quasars at z >4 . The study presented here is strongly biased against quasars beyond z >4.5 , since the e -passband of the POSS-I only samples the spectra shortward of 1200 Å at these redshifts.  相似文献

Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3), we investigate how narrow (<700 km s−1) C  iv and Mg  ii quasar absorption-line systems are distributed around quasars. The C  iv absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the Mg  ii absorbers in the range 0.4 < z < 2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines of sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30 Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are   r o∼ 5 h −1Mpc  , similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing correlations between absorbers and the quasars, in whose spectra they are identified, then implies: (i) that quasars destroy absorbers to comoving distances of ∼300 kpc (C  iv ) and ∼800 kpc (Mg  ii ) along their lines of sight; (ii) that ≳40 per cent of C  iv absorbers within 3000 km s−1 of the quasi-stellar object are not a result of large-scale clustering but rather are directly associated with the quasar itself; (iii) that this intrinsic absorber population extends to outflow velocities of the order of 12 000 km s−1; (iv) that this outflow component is present in both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars and (v) that a small high-velocity outflow component is also observed in the Mg  ii population. We also find an indication that absorption systems within 3000 km s−1 are more abundant for radio-loud quasars than for radio-quiet quasars. This suggests either that radio-loud objects live in more massive haloes, or that their radio activity generates an additional low-velocity outflow, or both.  相似文献

We present a measurement of the cluster X-ray luminosity–temperature ( L – T ) relation out to high redshift ( z ∼0.8). Combined ROSAT PSPC spectra of 91 galaxy clusters detected in the Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey (WARPS) are simultaneously fitted in redshift and luminosity bins. The resulting temperature and luminosity measurements of these bins, which occupy a region of the high-redshift L – T relation not previously sampled, are compared with existing measurements at low redshift in order to constrain the evolution of the L – T relation. We find the best fit to low-redshift ( z <0.2) cluster data, at T >1 keV, to be L ∝ T 3.15±0.06. Our data are consistent with no evolution in the normalization of the L – T relation up to z ∼0.8. Combining our results with ASCA measurements taken from the literature, we find η =0.19±0.38 (for Ω0=1, with 1 σ errors) where L Bol∝(1+ z ) η T 3.15, or η =0.60±0.38 for Ω0=0.3. This lack of evolution is considered in terms of the entropy-driven evolution of clusters. Further implications for cosmological constraints are also discussed.  相似文献

We use recent observations of high-redshift galaxies to study the evolution of galactic discs over the redshift range 0 <  z ≲1. The data are inconsistent with models in which discs were already assembled at z  = 1 and have evolved only in luminosity since that time. Assuming that disc properties change with redshift as powers of 1 +   z and analysing the observations assuming an Einstein–de Sitter universe, we find that for given rotation speed, disc scalelength decreases with z as ∼ (1 +  z )−1, total B -band mass-to-light ratio decreases with z as ∼ (1 +  z )−1, and disc luminosity (again in B ) depends only weakly on z . These scalings are consistent with current data on the evolution of disc galaxy abundance as a function of size and luminosity. Both the scalings and the abundance evolution are close to the predictions of hierarchical models for galaxy formation. If different cosmogonies are compared, the observed evolution in disc size and disc abundance favours a flat low-Ω0 universe over an Einstein–de Sitter universe.  相似文献

We present the spectra and redshifts of 62 quasars, from observations made with the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) 4-m Blanco Telescope. These quasars form part of a total sample of 118 (with 56 having been published previously), which is being used for analysis of structure in the early universe. Quasars of particular interest are noted, including eight broad absorption line (BAL) quasars and two quasars with unusual emission spectra. Finally, we include a short summary of the present status of the large quasar group (LQG) that was discovered by Clowes & Campusano from the earlier observations. The quasars are from an area ∼25.3 deg2 of ESO/SERC field 927, which is centred at (1950) 10h40m00s, 05°00'00'.  相似文献

Measuring the black hole masses of high-redshift quasars   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new technique is presented for determining the black hole masses of high-redshift quasars from optical spectroscopy. The new method utilizes the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the low-ionization Mg  ii emission line and the correlation between the broad-line region (BLR) radius and the continuum luminosity at 3000 Å. Using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra it is found that the correlation between BLR radius and 3000-Å luminosity is tighter than the established correlation with 5100-Å luminosity. Furthermore, it is found that the correlation between BLR radius and 3000-Å continuum luminosity is consistent with a relation of the form   R BLR∝λ L 1/2λ  , as expected for a constant ionization parameter. Using a sample of objects with broad-line radii determined from reverberation mapping it is shown that the FWHM of Mg  ii and Hβ are consistent with following an exact one-to-one relation, as expected if both Hβ and Mg  ii are emitted at the same radius from the central ionizing source. The resulting virial black hole mass estimator based on rest-frame UV observables is shown to reproduce black hole mass measurements based on reverberation mapping to within a factor of 2.5 (1σ). Finally, the new UV black hole mass estimator is shown to produce identical results to the established optical (Hβ) estimator when applied to 128 intermediate-redshift  (0.3 < z < 0.9)  quasars drawn from the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the radio-selected Molonglo quasar sample. We therefore conclude that the new UV virial black hole mass estimator can be reliably used to estimate the black hole masses of quasars from   z ∼ 0.25  through to the peak epoch of quasar activity at   z ∼ 2.5  via optical spectroscopy alone.  相似文献

We present the results of an initial search for clusters of galaxies at z ∼ 1 and above, using data from 2.9 square degrees of XMM–Newton images. By selecting weak potentially extended X-ray sources with faint or no identifications in deep, ground-based optical imaging, we have constructed a starting sample of 19 high-redshift cluster candidates. Near-IR and R , z ' imaging of these fields identified nine of them as high-redshift systems. Six of these were confirmed spectroscopically, three at z ∼ 1.0 and the other three in the  0.8 < z < 0.92  range. The remaining three systems have solid photometric evidence to be at   z phot∼ 0.8, 1.0  and 1.3. The present sample significantly increases the number of such clusters. The measured density of z ≳ 1 clusters, after discarding 'low'-redshift systems at z ≲ 0.92 is about 1.7 deg−2 (with 68 per cent confidence interval equal to [1.0, 2.9]) for   fX ≳ 2.5  10−15 erg cm−2 s−1  ([0.5–2] keV) and this is a lower limit, having screened not all potential z ∼ 1 candidate clusters. Coordinates, X-ray measures and evidence for nine X-ray-selected high-redshift clusters is given.  相似文献

We use semi-analytic modelling on top of the Millennium simulation to study the joint formation of galaxies and their embedded supermassive black holes. Our goal is to test scenarios in which black hole accretion and quasar activity are triggered by galaxy mergers, and to constrain different models for the light curves associated with individual quasar events. In the present work, we focus on studying the spatial distribution of simulated quasars. At all luminosities, we find that the simulated quasar two-point correlation function is fit well by a single power law in the range  0.5 ≲ r ≲ 20  h −1 Mpc  , but its normalization is a strong function of redshift. When we select only quasars with luminosities within the range typically accessible by today's quasar surveys, their clustering strength depends only weakly on luminosity, in agreement with observations. This holds independently of the assumed light-curve model, since bright quasars are black holes accreting close to the Eddington limit, and are hosted by dark matter haloes with a narrow mass range of a few  1012  h −1 M  . Therefore, the clustering of bright quasars cannot be used to disentangle light-curve models, but such a discrimination would become possible if the observational samples can be pushed to significantly fainter limits. Overall, our clustering results for the simulated quasar population agree rather well with observations, lending support to the conjecture that galaxy mergers could be the main physical process responsible for triggering black hole accretion and quasar activity.  相似文献

We present a sample of eight extended X-ray sources detected in the wide-field (∼2.3 deg2), bright (2–10 ks) XMM–Newton /2dF survey, reaching a flux limit of  ∼2 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2  . Of these, seven are identified as secure X-ray clusters in the soft 0.3–2 keV band using a standard wavelet algorithm on either the PN or the MOS images. Spectroscopic or photometric redshifts are available for five clusters, spanning a range between 0.12 and 0.68. The X-ray spectral fittings show temperatures between 1 and 4.6 keV, characteristic of poor clusters and groups of galaxies. We derive for the first time the XMM–Newton cluster number count  log  N –log  S   distribution albeit with poor statistics. Both the  log  N –log  S   and the luminosity–temperature relation are in good agreement with previous ROSAT results.  相似文献
