Abstract:In the last decades, measures to protect the natural resources and to restore the environment have considerably increased in middle Europe. These measures include also many rivers, which have been converted in the past into, more or less, man-made canals. To improve the ecological situation bushes and trees are often planted on the banks and side slopes. The designing engineer is thus faced with the hydraulic and sedimentologic consequences of such alterations. Extensive investigations demonstrated that the water discharge of such renaturalized water courses can be quantified with the EINSTEIN-HORTON-method extended by a vegetation-related roughness length kL.In combination with sediment transport formulae it can be demonstrated, that renaturalized alluvial rivers tend to change their morphological conditions by increasing depth and energy gradient.
