Abstract: | The mechanism of underwater earthquakes and tsunami wave generation in the Azov Sea-Black Sea region is studied, and theoretical
principles of selecting simulation models are elaborated. In this connection, the geophysical data on the distribution, intensity
and mechanisms of underwater seismic zones that may give rise to catastrophic disturbances of the marine environment are summarized
and categorized, specifically, those that give rise to tsunamis. This makes possible the development and updating of mathematical
models for the generation of seismic and surface gravity waves, considering geological heterogeneities, bottom irregularities,
bottom sediments, etc.
