ADVANTAGES OF INLAND SHIPPING AND PROSPECTS OF THE EXTENDED CONSTRUCTION PROJECT OF THE GRAND CANAL IN SHANDONG PROVINCE

Inland shipping is an important part of transportation and has its speciat advantages. The Grand Canal which has a history about 2500 years is the longest artificial canal and was excavated earliest in the world. Southwestern areas in Shandong Province are rich in mineral resources such as coal, plaster stone, etc. The river network areas in provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang and Shanghai city, the most important industrial procuction base, which are situated in the sourthern part of the Grand Canal and South of the Changjiang(Yangtze) river, are in urgent need for the great amount of the coal from the north, and the Jinpu(from Tianjin to Pukou) railway line has always been a busy one. There fore, it's quite necessary for the extended construction project of the Grand Canal (from Jining, Shandong Province to Xuzhou, Jiangsu province). The project consists of the channel, shipping dock, road bridge, control lock, harbor, shipyard, ship-repairing station, microwave communication, etc. The total investment of the project is 1446 million Yuan calculated at the fixed price of the year 1993. Aftcr the completion of the project, the net increased handling capacity of the harbor will add up to 15. 5 million tons and cargo passages capacity through the level-3 channel (willamount to) 40 million tons. Heavy responsibilities in the extended construction of the Canal in Shandong Province are to be shouldered, and its extended construction and accomplishment will contribute more to the economic development of Shandong Province and make our country stronger and people richer.
