Applications of apatite in study of ore deposits: A review

Abstract:Apatite is a common magmatic accessory mineral and hydrothermal mineral resistant to weathering and supergene oxidation, and therefore its geochemical characteristics can be used as an ideal proxy to understand the evolution of magmatic and/or hydrothermal events, because it could preserve and record considerably original information of magmatism and hydrothermal mineralization. The detailed investigation to apatite often provides important approaches in solving scientific problems in studying mineral deposits. Based on a review of recent studies of apatite in the field of econornic, we clarify some controversies and key scientific issues for the applications of apatite and provide a better insight for using apatite to indicate the genetic types of ore deposits, trace the origin and evolution of magmas and related mineralizing fluids, as well as assist in explorations for potential targets. We aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding for further study of apatite mineralogy and geochemistry, raise the prospecting work with the help of apatite, and strengthen extensive discussion of geological problems related to apatite based on the review of this paper.
