During the last decades the use of groundwater of the Grunewald area has caused a drastic lowering of the groundwater table. In order to preserve the watertable of the lakes situated at the Grunewald area water from the Havel is conveyed since many years into the lake system of Schlachtensee, Krumme Lanke, Grunewaldsee etc. This water is rich in nutritive material and has brought the primary uncontaminated water of the lakes to a high stage of entropy and has changed their ecosystem. The amount of oxygen in the hypolimnion decreases during the summer month to zero, the livingspace for fish for example is reduced to the upper two meters of the epilimnion during the same time. An extensive elimination of phosphate and enrichment of oxygen is necessary to compensate these indirect consequences of exaggerated use of groundwater and to maintain the value of this important recreation area.
