Abstract:The Galilean moons, especially Io, affect not just their local environment but also the Jovian ionosphere at the ends of the flux tubes connected to the moons. Moreover, the mass added to the magnetosphere by Io affects much of the rest of the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is energized by this mass-loading, powering the aurora, accelerating radiation belt particles, and generating radio emissions. This review examines how the mass-loading affects the magnetosphere and ionosphere; the differences in the interactions of Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto; and some of the kinetic phenomena associated with the interaction.
