Abstract: | This paper reviews the current status of research concerned with modeling the ionospheric wind dynamo. Simulation models have been reasonably successful in reproducing the types of magnetic perturbations that are produced by the dynamo. Ionospheric electric fields are less well simulated, particularly at night. The primary areas of research needed to improve our ability to simulate realistically the ionospheric wind dynamo are in the modeling of nighttime conditions, hemispherical asymmetries of thermospheric tides, and mutual dynamic coupling among winds, conductivities, electric fields, and electric currents. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. |
