Abstract:The relaxation time of the ocean phosphate system is close to 105 Yr. The behaviour of this system is here explored using a simple box model. This approach illustrates that changes in upwelling in low- to mid- latitudes might exert a significant influence on the atmospheric pCO2, and that the long-term relaxation behaviour of the ocean phosphate system would rend to enhance the importance of the 100 kyr frequency component in the climatic record.
