Abstract:Xinjiang is contiguous to on 8 countries, possesses geosuperiority for developing frontier trade tourism and transnational tourism, and has a strong appeal to both of the domestic and foreign tourists, is rich in tourist resources, nd has a great potentiality for developing tourism. After a 20 - year development, the tourism in Xinjiang possesses the complete tourist infras- tructure, reception facilities and talented persons engaging in tourism. This paper analyzes the development momentum and situation of the tourism in Xinjiang and the market characteristics of the tourist sources over the years. Based on the recent planning work if tourism for some re- gions of Xinjiang, the existing problems in the tourism development are summed up, and some suggestions are put forward for a sustainable development of the tourism in Xinjiang. It is pointed out that at present the transformation rate of the tourist resources is low and the tourist resources is seriously destroyed due to deficiency of investment and rational planning. Xinjiang is characterized by the fragile ecological environment, therefore, protection, survey and planning of tourist resources are extremely urgent. It is suggested to strengthen the application of the spots of historic interest and scenic beauty in state grade and autonomous region grade, concentrate the financial regources for developing the cock spots of historic interist and scenic beauty, enhance propaganda of the tourist spots, open up the market of tourist sources, complete tourist laws and regulations, introduce competition mechanism in tourism, enhance the overall quality of the personnel engaging in tourist, etc.
