Abstract:In this year of the Bicentenary of European settlement in Australia, it must be remembered that humans have been present in Australia for at least 40,000 years, longer than in the Americas or the Pacific island countries. The year 1788, however, marks a discontinuity in the population history and geography of Australia, and this review considers past trends and contemporary dynamics in order to illustrate the population issues confronting Australia in her Bicentenary year.
