Abstract:This research focuses on understanding the inf1uence of acid rain on lakes inTaiwan. Our purpose is to document the extent of lake acidification and the rele ase of Al at various pH levels. Over 120 lakes and reservoirs in Taiwan, 3 inPenghu, 6 in Kingman, 5 in Matsu, and several in Hsialiuchiu, Lutao and Lanyuhave been investigated in the past few years. About 20% lakes with 1ow alkalinityare more threatened by the acid rain. These are mostly alpine and subalpinelakes or are located near the Tatun and Keelong volcano groups. The NTA (norma lized total alkalinity)is an acidification index for Takes. The decrease of the NTAfor Lovers Lake, Hsin-shan Res., Nuannuan Res., Yuen-Yang Lake, Lung-RungLake, Carp Lake (Hua Lien County ) and Little Ghost Lake suggestel acidification.The acidification of Lovers Lake, Yuen-Yang Lake, Carp Lake and Little GhostLake were probably related to the acid rain. The other lakes NTA mostly remai.ned constant. Heavy metal concentrations in 12 lakes were within the limit set byEPA. The Lovers Lake has lower pH but Higher Heavy metal concentrations thanthe other lakes.
