A radiation boundary condition for finite-element models: 1-D linear advection test

Abstract:Summary A linear 1-D advection equation is used to study the utilization of a finite-element method and open lateral boundary conditions. Two possible implementations of a radiation (Sommerfeld) boundary condition are tested for the case of a solitary wave passing through a computational domain — the case corresponding to zero lateral boundary values — and for the case of a simple sinusoidal wave which corresponds to a non-zero boundary forcing.
