Spherical harmonic analysis of the geomagnetic secular variation — A review of methods

Methods of producing spherical harmonic models of the secular variation of the geomagnetic field are reviewed and classified, more emphasis being given to modern methods. The relative merits of the different techniques are discussed and their relevance to possible procedures for updating the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) are considered.
