沈玉昌与中国现代地貌学

沈玉昌教授是我国着名的地理学家和杰出的地貌学家。在60年的地理科学工作中,他对我国现代地貌学发展做出了卓越的贡献。从河流地貌、地貌区划与地貌制图、应用地貌等方面进行了综述。

SHEN YUCHANG AND GEOMORPHOLOGY IN CHINA

Professor Shen Yuchang is a famous geographer and outstanding geomorphologist in China. ln the 60 years of doing geographical research, his outstanding contributions to geomorphology can be generalized as follows. 1. Contribution in fluvial geomorphology Prof. Shen is the founder of modern geomorphology in China. In his 40-year work at fluvial geomorphology, he has made a great contribution to many important issues in fluvial geomor-phology, leading to the establishment of fluvial geomorpholody in China as a science. After the founding of new China, in order to meet the needs for the construction of large-scale water conservancy works, he organized the research workers of Geomorphological Department to make systematic research into the Changjiang River valley and its tributaries, and established the theory of rive valley geomorphology in China, which was represented by his monograph River Valley Geomorphology of the Changjiang River.In this book, he first studied the history of Changjiang valley development in a systematic way, on the basis of many reliable evidences. In 1960s, aiming at the new tendency of emphasizing modern processes in the international geomorphological community, he developed the research direction of channel processes in China,and thereby promoted the fluvial geo-morphology to a new stage. He put forward a new classification of river channel patterns, and made an incised study of the braided pattern of the lower Yellow River. 2.Geomorphological regionalization, survey and mapping ln his famous papers and monograph A Discussion On Landform Types and Geomorphological Regionalization,On the Principles and Approaches in Geomorphological Regionalization,Geomor-phological Regionalization in China, he developed a systematic theory on landform classification and geomorphological regionalization, which has been widely applied in practice of landform survey and mapping in China. ln the 1980s, he organized the project of 1;1 000000 geomorphological mapping in China, publishing a standardized geomorphological survey and mapping manual and 15 geomor-phological maps in selected areas, which have been regarded as a benchmark in geomorphological suyvey and mapping in China. 3. Applided geomorphology Prof. Shen emphazed the importance of combining geomorphological research to economic construction, and made many great contributions to applied geomorphology, among which the most famous are the site selection for the Danjiangkou Reservoir and the Three Gorges Dam, the course selection for the long distance water transfer from the Hanjiang to Huanghe Rivers, and. the line selection for the railway construction in Southwest China.
