Abstract:The hypothesis that the earth's core consists of metallized mantle substances has been recently reanimated. The large volume changes which accompany the phase transformations of rutile-cubic phase and perovskite—mixed oxides for TiO2 and (Fe,Mg)TiO3, respectively, contradict the shock data for similar phase transformations in SiO2 and MgSiO3. In view of the relatively low pressure at the mantle-core boundary, this does not favor the hypothesis of a silicate or oxide core for the earth.
