摘    要:1 BANK EROSION IN THE LOWER YELLOW RIVER In alluvial rivers, riverbeds are always in a state of transition and development. Two kinds of deformations result for the fluvial process according to certain basic characteristics. One is longitudinal deformation that is characterized by the deformation of a riverbed in the direction of streamwise flow such as riverbed scour or deposition. The other is transverse or lateral deformation that is distinguished by the deformation of a riverb…

Abstract:This paper studies the nature of bank erosion in the Lower Yellow River. Numerical models available for simulating the longitudinal and lateral deformation of a riverbed are compared. Most of them are not applicable to model the bed deformation in the Lower Yellow River. A two-dimensional (2D) composite model consisting of a 2D flow-sediment mathematical submodel and a riverbank retreat and advance submodel is developed to simulate the longitudinal and lateral deformation. The model is validated through an example of the bed deformation process of the Huayuankou-Laitongzhai reach of the Lower Yellow River. The results agree well with the measured data in the water level, velocity fields, and variations of cross-sectional profiles. The model is capable of simulating the longitudinal deformation of a riverbed and the processes of bank retreat and advance, especially the process of bank lateral erosion and failure.
