Abstract: | The dynamic stability of a statically stable parallel shear flow is modulated by the presence of a finite amplitude wave. This can cause turbulent breakdown of the flow in the regions of reduced stability. The fluxes of momentum and heat driven by the turbulence interact with the initiating wave, and in favorable circumstances this leads to growth of the wave amplitude so that the wave-turbulence system is explosively unstable. Such interaction seems to be possible within the night-time inversion of the atmosphere.National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/University of Colorado. |
