A STUDY ON THE RURAL URBANIZATION IN THE PEARL RIVER DELTA

The definition of rural urbanization is discussed, and the basic characteristics and restictite factors of rural urbanization in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) are analysed. The modes of urbanizaation may vary in different countries or different regions. Urbanization in the PRD is one of the fastest in China, but it has still lagged behind the industrialization in the region. In order to speed up the course of urbanization in PRD, the following aspects should be emphasizied: 1) Further forming a setup of the regional mordernized economic development; 2) Forming a good regional infrastructure network and a public welfare serving facility system; 3) Devoting major efforts to developing education, enhancing the comprehensive quality of the population; 4) hasing environment-pretection consciousness, improving environmental management; 5) constructing a system of cities and towns with coordinated scale-proportion, rational functions and orderly distribution; 6) sterngthening urban planning and accelerating urban construction.
