Abstract: | I present a critical review of recent progress in the field of quasar evolution, concentrating on the methodical issues of constructing and analysing observed quasar samples. In particular, I attempt to trace the origins and shortcomings of the popular concept of ‘pure luminosity evolution’ that has dominated the discussion over the last decade. I discuss results from new surveys showing that this notion should be abandoned, and that quasar evolution is more complex than previously thought. |
