Abstract:This paper deals with the stability and viscosity of clay colloids and the effects of ESP (exchangeable sodium percentage, in case the complementary cation is Ca~(2+)), pH and concentration. Results showed that the flocculation value and viscosity of montmorillonite colloids were higher than those of kaolinite and illite. At lower clay concentration, the relationship between viscosity and clay concentration could be described by the Einstein viscosity equation, indicating that the dominant factors affecting the viscosity of clay colloids were the geometic factors of clay particles, i. e., particle shape and size.It was shown that ESP would have significant influence on the viscosity of montmorillonite colloids, whereas little effect was observed for kaolinite and illite. The effects on the viscosity of montmorillonite colloids are different for naturally-occurring Ca-montmorillornite and naturally-occurring Na-montmorillonite.Results showed that pH had significant influence on the viscosities of montmorillonite and kaolinite colloids, while little effect was observed for illite. The effect of pH on the viscosity of clay colloids turned out to be contrary to that of zeta potential. Three pH zones for montmorillonitte and two for kaolinite could be distinguished. The mechanism of pH effect was also discussed in this pape r.
