Discussion of: Experimental test of autosuspension (southard and mackintosh, 1981)

The use of a pipe-flow experiment for testing autosuspension criteria is criticized. It is argued that the proposed criterion for autosuspension is a necessary but not a sufficient condition, and that an analysis of turbidity currents can fill this gap.
