Abstract::A data structure plays an outstanding role in GIS It is directly related to the func tion and efficiency of a GIS A new generation GIS should be capable of integrating various data of GIS DEM arid RS To serve this erjd, this paper proposes an unified data structure which has the properties peculiar to both, vector and raster. This structure is based on linear quadtree encoding for increasing the, geometric accuracy of raster representation and speeding database indexing use is made of multi-grid technique It can replace conventional vector and raster data structure and has the advantages of main taining better accuracy compressing storage space representing topological and spatial relations among various features and supporting object-oriented data models It can serve as a base of future GIS
