Abstract:China is one of the countries with frequent earthquakes, and the frequency of destructive earthquakes is relatively high. With the rapid development of China’s economy and the acceleration of the urbanization process, the improvement of the awareness of earthquake risk and the higher requirements of the country for the ability of earthquake emergency rescue have promoted the research on the methods of earthquake disaster assessment. Among them, the assessment method of earthquake casualties is the most important one in disaster prediction. However, most of the historical earthquakes in China occur in the west, and the existing assessment method of earthquake casualties is also based on the statistical analysis of historical seismic data in the West. In the eastern region with higher population density and more developed economy, once a destructive earthquake occurs, its disaster degree will be far beyond the western region, so the existing methods can not meet the needs of earthquake prevention and emergency rescue decision-making in the eastern region. It is necessary to modify the assessment method of earthquake casualties suitable for the eastern region according to the characteristics of the eastern region. Comparing the major regional differences between China’s east and west, the influencing factors of earthquake casualties are analyzed. And the seismic performance differences of buildings focus on the proportion of self-built houses in cities and the proportion of main structural types in rural areas.The correction coefficient of earthquake casualty assessment in the eastern region is given, and its applicability is analyzed by some examples.
