On the tidal theory of solar activity

The hypothesis of a generation or triggering of solar activity by the combined planetary tides on the solar surface is examined by a search for correlations between the sunspot numbers and the tidal amplitudes, using averaged values of several time scales (between one day and eleven years), and taking non-linear amplitude effects into account. The result is negative: There exist no detectable correlations.
