Abstract:Bangladesh suffers serious floods every year.Once the flood of the Brahmaputra River happens, about one third of the country will be submerged. So,flood control and river training become the urgent task of the hydraulic engineers. After analyzing floods, sediment load and river morphology, the paper concludes that the Brahmaputra River may be classified as a wandering branched river, and its channel is nearly in equilibrium with an annual aggrading rate of 0.01m.The hydrodynamic features of the river are similar to those of the Yangtze River, and its configuration and transversal stability are close to those of the Yellow River.According to characteristics of the Brahmaputra River and experience from the Yangtze and the Yellow rivers, two schemes of river training, the node control scheme and bend control scheme, are also suggested.
Keywords:Wandering branched river   Flood control and river training   Channel degradation and aggradation   Node control and bend control
