Methods of calculating atmospheric densities from satellite orbit data

Formulae relating atmospheric density to the rate of change of period of a satellite have been obtained by various workers for two asymptotic cases: (i) eccentricity e small (< 0.3) and (ii) e large (> 0.012). These results arc reviewed, and in the overlapping region, 0.012 < e < 0.3, the formulae are shown to be in agreement to the various orders of magnitude considered.
