Abstract:We discuss the hypothesis suggested by Mazurek (1979) that neutrino oscillations (v e rlarrv mgr) could transfer leptonic zero-point energy (e -,v e ; gamma<4/3) to baryons during the gravitational collapse of a massive star (Mgap10M odot) and that subsequently the collapse ends in a stellar explosion (gamma>4/3). The estimation of the lengths of neutrino oscillations if occuring in vacuum or dense matter, respectively, shows, however, that vacuum oscillations can be suppressed in dense matter and, therefore, should have no influence on the neutrino emission of neutron stars.
