Abstract:As far as historical records are concerned, Peking has been effected by at least 170 earthquakes of which 11 are damaging. The most destructive earthquakes effecting Peking are the San-Ho earthquake of Sept. 2, 1679 and the earthquake of Sept. 80, 1780 occurring in the Hsi-Shan area. The frequency of occurrence of earthquakes in Peking is not uniform. It seems to have reached a maximum in the 17th century and is comparatively low at the present time. However, instrumental observations showed that the Hsi-Shan area is not stable. In this paper, several of the important historical earthquakes are described in detail, especially those of 1679 and 1780. Particular attention has been paid to the damages done to structures by these earthquakes. The regional division into seismic zones of the whole Chinese territory has been carried out by Professor G. P. Gorshkov and Peking is located in an 8-degree zone. However, for construction purposes, the variation in seismicity in the Peking area is required. Without adequate instrumental data, this can best be obtained by taking account of the hydrogeological conditions and characteristics of the ground. The method was originally examined by A. Sieberg, but has since been greatly extended and made more definite by Professor S. V. Medvedev. This method is described in detail in the present paper and a micro-seismic map of the Peking area is given.
