Abstract:Effects of flow turbulence, sediment supply conditions and sediment motion patterns on sorption of Cadmium ions by sediment particles have been studied both in a static experiment and in a device, in which turbulence was generated by a harmonically vibrating set of grids. The result indicates that the sediment motion pattern has no effect on the characteristic parameters in the adsorption isotherm, that is, the saturated adsorption content by unit weight of sediment and the constant of sorption -desorption rate in the Langmuir absorption isotherm. But it has a significant effect on the coefficient of sorption rate (or the coefficient of desorption rate) in the adsorption dynamics. If turbulent intensity of now is low and all sediment exists as bottom mud, the coefficient of sorption rate of sediment (or the coefficient of desorption rate of sediment) is very little, thus the descending rate of Cadmium concentration in the water phase is little. If the turbulent intensity of flow is high, whether sediment exists on the bed or not greatly influences the variation of Cadmium concentrations in the water phase. If the sediment on the bed could be lifted up, the descending rate of Cadmium concentration in the water phase is large. In other words, the coefficient of sorption rate (or the coefficient of desorption rate) by unit weight of suspended sediment is much larger than that by unit weight of bottom mud.
