Abstract: | The UN/ESA workshops aim to foster the development of basic space science in developing countries. It is argued that the involvement
of these countries in international collaborations in ground-based astronomy is an effective method of achieving this aim.
A brief analysis of patterns of international cooperation in ground-based astronomy is presented. Where possible, the discussion
is illustrated with examples chosen to highlight contributions by developing countries. Mechanisms to support international
cooperation are discussed, along with some problems and possible solutions.
