Abstract:The microplanktonic algae have been suggested as a major precursor for the organic matter associated with ancient sediments. The Chatacterization and distribution pattern of hydrocarbons from algae,both in states of gas and liquid,may be determined by the different source organism. The original hydrocarbons before thermal evolution and secondary hydrocarbons after thermal evolution even from the same algal organism may appear the difference. Results of our experiments show that the biochemical changes and compositions in algal cells are the key factor to determine the characterization and distribution pattern of hydrocarbons. In addition,the medium, procedure and conditions of experimental pyrolysis maycause the different distribution patterns in hydrocarbons. The biochemical degradation in algal cells before thermal degradation plays an important role in formation of organic matterand hydrocarbons. The formation and distribution of petroleum is controlled not only bygeochemical maturity but also by biochemical maturity (i. e. biochemical degradation). Theyellowing and increase of biochemical maturity in algal cells may result in increase of hydrocarbons both in quantity and quality,which result from the increase of lipids in the cells.
