Abstract: | This study decribes two numerical models used to compute tidal wave propagation in shallow water basins of limited size. The wave acts as a boundary condition to excite a response in the basin. Atmospheric driving forces such as wind and pressure gradient are not considered. The models integrate hydrodynamical equations describing water motions inside basins subjected to tidal waves from the open sea. Two hypotheses for the basin depths are considered: the first model considers depths that vary in space but not in time, the second considers depths that vary in space and time. The numerical models simulate the propagation of tidal waves from the open sea into shallow water basins approximating the lagoon of Venice.Computed values from the two models, when compared with observational data collected in the past, show acceptable agreement. |
