Comparison of Viking Lander Descent Data and MOLA Topography Reveals Kilometer-Scale Offset in Mars Atmosphere Profiles

  • Abstract:Each Viking Lander measured a topographic profile during entry. Comparing to MOLA, we find a vertical offset of 1-2 km in the Viking trajectory. Hence, Viking atmospheric densities and pressures at a given altitude are 10-20% too large.
