张文佑教授地学研究五十年

张文佑教授自1934年北京大学地质系毕业开始从事地学研究以来,迄今已整整五十年了。张文佑教授是国内外著名的地质学家和大地构造学家,现任中国科学院主席团成员、中国科学院地学部常委、中国科学院地质研究所所长和国务院学位委员会委员,并兼任中国地质学会和中国石油学会副理事长以及其他多种职务,五十年代早期还曾任中国科学院学术秘书处秘书。

PROFESSOR CHANG WENYOU’S 50 YEARS IN GEOSCIENCES

It has been 50 years that Professor Chang Wenyou has engaged in geosciences since his graduation in the Department of Geology, Beijing University in 1934. He is very well known in the world for his excellent work and contribution to geology, especially to tectonics. He is a member of the Presidium of Academia Sinica, Standing member of the Department of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica; director of the Institute of Geology, Academia Sinica; member of Academia Degree Committee of the State Council; Vice-President of Geological Society of China and of Petroleum Geological Society of China. He also holds some other important positions. In the early fifties, he worked as the secretary of the Secretariat, Academia Sinica. Before the liberation Professor Chang took an active part in patriotic student campaign, supported and shielded secret party members. After liberation he participated in the leading group of Nanjing Military Control Commission to take over the Acade-mia Sinica(before 1949)and worked as a member of the Adviser Committee for China’s geological work. Under the leadership of the party he participated in organizing geological exploration and geological research. He became a party member in 1956.Professor Chang works enthusiastically for our motherland and socialist economic reconstruction, dares to bear heavy hardens and has made contributions in many aspects, such as in oil and gas prospecting, iron-rich ore exploration, earthquake prediction and protection as well as many important engineering projects. In finding Daqing oil ’field, he along with other scientists won the National Ist Prize of Natural Sciences. He works his heart out for the development of geological sciences of our country. For the last thirty years he and Professor Hou Dengfeng led the Institute of Geology to explore new fields one after another. He strives to develope new theory in geotectonics creatively, advocates to geomechanical and geohistorical analysis methods, a combination of researches both on deformation and formation, and has founded a complete theory on fault systems and fault block tectonics. He led the compilation of "Tectonics Map of China" and the writting of "Tectonic configuration of China", which won the 2nd National Prize of Natural Sciences. Professor Chang has developed his own way of doing research and teaching. He bases geotectonics on advanced knowledge of sciences and new technology. He exposes students to all kinds of scientific ideas, and let them learn what is right and wrong. He has trained many geologists with active ideas, wide background of sciences and deep insight in geosciences. Looking back on Professor Chang’s life in geological sciences is of important significance in carrying out our party’s policy for Academia Sinica, facing the needs of economy reconstruction, and the development of geological sciences in our country.
