A modified piston sampler for lake sediments is described. The sampler employs the piston of the Livingstone device in conjunction with the use of a falling weight to penetrate the sampling tube into compact sediments without the use of casing. The sampler can core up to 6 metres of minerogenic and organic sediments and can easily be handled by 2–3 persons both from ice and rafts in lakes with water depths to at least 20–30 m.
