The author presents a comprehensive list of different types of forests, groves, and single species which are preserved, or singled out for preservation, and puts forward the case for an additional list of occurrences worthy of conservation. So far preservation has been largely dependent on state ownership of land and planning has been unsatisfactory mainly because executive organs have been understaffed. It is argued that Norway's exceptionally favourable maritime climate makes it desirable to have a good coverage of marginal northerly occurrences. An ample selection of examples should also be aimed at both from the East-West and from the vertical vegetational zonings.
