The Uldal Earth Pillars
Abstract:In the Uldal, a tributary valley to Gudbrandsdal, Central Norway, there are a number of earth pillars (“demoiselles”) eroded from moraine material covering the north side of the valley. Their popular name “Kvitskriuprestinn”, the “white scree priests”, very aptly refers to the shining whiteness of the screes among the pines covering the steep slopes of intact moraine, and the “priests”, the pillars themselves with covering stones.
