Abstract:During a solar eclipse, the ionic density in the E-layer decreases by 20-70%, that in the F_1-layer, by 30-80% and that in the F_2-layer, by 10-60%. The true height of each layeris lowered, but the lowest apparent height is raised. This is due to the decrease of the thicknesses of the layers. Calculations based on data obtained from different eclipses show that the resultant coefficient is of the order of 10~(-8) for the E-layer, 10~(-9) for the F_1-and 10~(-10) for the F_2-layers. From the analysis, the ionization energy of the air molecules in the ionos others is mainly derived from the ultra-violet radiations from the sun and these are more intense in the corona and the prominence. The sporatic E and other layers occurring during solar eclipse are also discussed.
