Abstract:Galactic winds are important in recycling energy and metals in galaxies. They are also suspected to be the primary mechanism in the enrichment of the intergalactic medium. New observations are revealing the ubiquity of galactic winds, particularly at high redshift. We review the observational evidence for them in nearby star-forming and active galaxies and in the high-redshift universe.
