Abstract:Oil pollution from the tanker Palva which ran aground in Finnish waters in 1969 provides an example of the hazards of oil spills in cold waters. The Palva incident and its aftermath were studied by Finnish biologists and some of their findings are reported here. The chief casualties were eider ducks, but fortunately long-term effects appear to have been small.
