Difficulties and misunderstandings in the classification of the fish species of Lake Constance, especially of Cyprinidae and Coregoninae, induced us to work out a determination key. When basing a classification only on the number of gill rakers it was impossible to determine the Coregoninae. Further characteristics, even ones influenced by external factors, have been used, because these were combined contemporaneously with different genetic behaviour. The distribution of the Lake Constance Coregoninae on the 5 or 6 species recognized today has been corrected.
