The solar neutrino problem

The observed capture rate for solar neutrinos in the ³⁷Cl detector is lower than the predicted capture rate. This discrepancy between theory and observation is known as the ‘solar neutrino problem’. I review the basic elements in this problem: the detector efficiency, the theory of stellar (solar) evolution, the nuclear physics of energy generation, and the uncertainties in the predictions. I also answer the questions of: So What? and What Next?
